89 Bumper Removal

I’ve seen quite a few people who have removed the safety bumper and love the look, but I am having a great deal of difficulty figuring out how to remove the safety struts, as they appear to be welded to the frame. I was wondering if anyone has had luck either removing just the piston or the entire bracket, as the car has aged out of inspections and would benefit from the weight savings/ aesthetic simplification but I don’t want to harm it irreparably.

We did not get those awful bumpers here so I can not help in how to remove them but here are a couple of pics of my car and how the bumpers are mounted.

You can see the mount under the bonnet hinge The bottom 2 pics are the original mount and the new one I made from aluminium and stainless.

The piston is bolted into the chassis tube from behind (24 below). You have to remove quite a bit of the radiator stack to get to it, then it just pulls out:

Greg,
I decided tonight to remove the bumper to get my engine hoist a bit closer in....but when I unbolted the piston on the passenger side, there didn't seem to be any movement at all (and on the driver's side, the shaft is spinning as I'm trying to loosen the nut!!

Help!

Brad

P.S. if this all comes together early, the engine comes out tomorrow (it's a holiday here in the US - at least for now, until the radical "progressives" get Columbus canceled as a noteworthy explorer)

If you do not want the pistons etc, cut the nut off. The piston may well be rusted into the chassis tube it is located in, so may need persuading.
