89 XJS Ignition Question

about 7 years ago I bought a 50k mile near mint XJS convertible that had an engine fire. I had trouble finding all the parts but have finally tracked them down. The problem is its been covered in a storage garage 20 miles from home all this time. Now Im ready to work on it and the guy at the garage lost my only set of keys. Id like to just order a lock set and ignition tumbler. How do I replace the ignition tumbler with out destroying anything? I am an ex mechanic so dont be afraid to get technical. Unfortunatly Ive never done the XJS Before.

The ignition lock unit is fixed to the column with special security screws. Use a center punch and carefully remove the screws. You will need to replace these screws with new ones, or as I did cut a slot in the head with a Dremel. This will allow you screw the lock unit back into the column with a regular screwdriver. The only problem is the lock can now be removed with a screwdriver. I don't think this is a problem as nobody will steal an XJS (at least here in Aus)

Are you just breaking the heads off with the punch? After removing the bolts that secure the column to the dash, Is there enough room in the car to dremel a slot in those bolts or is it better Idea to pull the column.

I don't think there is enough room to do it in the car. I had to pull the column to repair the horn, took me about 1.5hours to have it on the bench.

To remove the screws use a punch to undo the them. Once out put them in a vice or multigrips then I used the Dremel to cut the slot.

Maybe I'm missing something here (wouldn't be the first time), but wouldn't it be easier to go to a local Jag dealership with the VIN and registration (or some proof of ownership) and order new keys?
The garage might/should reimburse you for the expense.

Bill
