92 XJS convertible 12. shimmy in front

Friends. have had the car about 1.5 years. at the beginning just a tad of a front shimmy. then it became much worse. Up to this point I have replaced upper and lower ball joints, new struts, alignment from supposedly best shop in town, new tires, new front bearings. some new bushings where it was obvious, replaced anti roll bar links. Nothing has worked. Now I am thinking could it be the rims? way back I did exchange the two front tires but I did not move the problem. Had purchased for wife as I already have an 87 coupe. It is too the point I don't want to drive it!!!!!!!!!!! Pls help. Jim

A bit obvious but have you checked your tyre pressures?

orangeblossom 08-08-2018 01:25 AM

Again obvious

But did you have the Wheels Balanced, when the New Tyres were put on?

Jack up the Front of the Car and push and pull the Front Wheels Top and Bottom, if you've got any movement, it could still be the Wheel Bearings

Also could be steering rack mounts if they haven't been changed; does the whole car shimmy at the front or just the steering wheel?

macdoesit 08-08-2018 04:27 AM

Could it be balljoints ? I once had a 67 VW bug steering wheel shook like crazy and it was balljoints.

I would take a look at the stubaxles. They wear on the underside and causes what feels like badly adjusted wheel bearings, you just can't adjust this...

Does the problem fade under hard acceleration or moderate cornering? You've thrown darts at everything else but there a few other (somewhat unlikely) things to consider.. Front subframe mounts front/rear and the steering column linkage itself.

We need a better description of exactly what it is doing.

Please describe the shimmy in more detail. Does it telegraph through the steering wheel? Is it at a certain speed?

catterwaller 08-08-2018 10:58 AM

Are the break rotors true? Jack it up and spin the wheels. Do the breaks drag and release?
Check the lug nuts for tightness.
Are the rims correct fit for the XJS?

Power steering leak?

Steve M 08-08-2018 01:45 PM

I think he's left the building.

received new tires about one month ago. they balanced etc

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 02:45 PM

good point. I am going to exchange wheels from the 92 to my 87 Jag coupe and see whats what

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:16 PM

as soon as you reach about 15mph it feels as if the drivers side of the car has a shimmy. I can feel it through the steering. the amount of shimmy seems to stay about the same until you reach higher speeds. at 60 -70 most of it is reduced.

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:17 PM

the shimmy is or appears to be generated from the drivers side only

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:18 PM

I had upper and lower replaced

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:19 PM

I am going to have these examined and will gladly replace if that will resolve

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:20 PM

I am going to take car for a drive and detail every thing possible so additional info can be generated

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:21 PM

this is something I have not specifically done but will be completing

jimmy and Tommy 08-08-2018 03:22 PM

the rims are the factory standard
