AAV Replacement testing(pictures)

Hi guys I bought an 85 xjs a couple weeks ago and I found the car was having a very weak idle when cold, usually sub 500 rpm then only about 500 when warm. I loosened the nut and when warm it fixed the idle issue but not when cold. I picked up an AAV off a classified for cheap and decided to test it out before installing. Let me know if you guys think this is right(besides how filthy it is lol) Is it normal for the valve to be partially closed when cold?

Hi Claytronno

Grant 'aka' 'The Wizard of Oz' is an Expert on this, as so is 'Greg in France' so hopefully one of them will jump in and sort your problem out.

Cannot see the snaps.

The AAV can, and usually is, partially closed when cold. The main concern is the 100% closing when hot.

The piston jams in the bore, and that CAN prevent proper closing, AND proper opening.

This is my paper on them, with snaps.

Thanks for this, In my pictures it closes entirely in boiling water and it has a couple mm showing when cold. It was the couple mm I was concerned about. Thanks for clearing that up! Cheers.

Very cruelly cut valve

Hi Grant, have actually started a service here in the USA for these units, was able to find a Thermal Bulb that works when reconditioning the AAV/Idle air valve, to replace the olde units that no longer respond to squeezing, etc. Am able to exchange the olde units for a limited inventory of ready to ship units that have been calibrated and adjusted to factory specs. The new Thermal Motor gets the unit back to another life of???? several of my machines date back to 82 and up. Once all vac leaks are tracked down and the coolant system is properly burped...22qts of coolant with a change and flush the machine settles down and purrs like its supposed to. My exchange units are good for Concours events as I do not cut the upper stack to open/gain access to the inner piston and sleeve for polishing and honing. Thus no JB weld seams exposed.

Currently working on a Lutz enginerred Vented rotor kit for the inboard brake IRS on all machines up to 1994?, when the design was changed by Ford..XJ40 and on
Also am selling a Lutz Lift Plate for all IRS units from the MarK X to last IRS in that pattern 1996, It allows for the rearend to be picked up with a single trolley jack and is permanently mounted to the IRS...... Like a plastic tip on a shoelace, hard to believe Jag didn't engineer this. Best to you and the good wife, Jon and Gillian.
