about to purchase low miles Garage Queen 1995 V6 XJS
I currently have three Jaguars and all have less than 50K miles. They are 2004 XJ8, 2003 S-Type, and XJ6. I previously owned a 1994 XJ12 and another 1997 XJ6. I sold both at 100K miles and I kept them in pristine condition.
The 1995 XJS that I am interested in belongs to one owner and has less than 60K miles. I have an appointment tomorrow to inspect the Jaguar. Since this XJS had the same engine as my 1997 XJ6, I am very familiar with all the issues with this engine. The lady owner told me that top had been replaced and AC is not working. She is asking for $6,000.00. I searched and prices are eractics from extremely high to low. Is this a good investment?It seems that good condition and low miles 1995 and 1996 have their values go up every year. What is a fair market price should I pay considering AC is not working? What cautions should I take? |
i would not purchase it as a investment, the price seems pretty fair to me, i wouldn't count on the price going up a whole lot though, but then again you never know. i would say buy it if you want to enjoy it, if you want to buy it to sit on it as a investment ehh id buy silver instead. jmo
the price does seem good enough you probably could make a couple bucks maybe fixing a few small issues and make a quick flip on it. the higher priced xjs's tend to sit on the market for a very long time and they likely end up taking a lot less than asking price when they do finally sell. |
I agree investment potential is iffy and seems to be market dependant, like here in Australia a good facelift convertible would set you back north of $50k where as a few years ago convertibles were around the $10k mark.
AC not working could be easy, like a leak in the engine bay, or difficult to impossible if it's an issue with the ECU or heater/evap unit in the dash. You say V6 I assume it's an inline 6 not a V12 which are easier to work on and still pretty bullet proof. |
If its low miles the other issue to consider is future catchup work when you put your foot into it and start using it regularly... hoses, fuel lines but it's all fairly simple to deal with, and not much different then any 25+ yr old car. Your car's engine shpuld qualify for an Andy Bracket, easy and great performance mod.

My nickel:
1. More correctly described, a "slant six". 2. Aye the AC could be an easy fix. recharge it1 Or complicated, read expensive. worst of all worlds., a leak in the evaporatorr, deep in the dash!!! 3. AC in a convertible has always seemed odd to me... 4. very nice example. worthy of doing some fixes.. Carl |
I bought it for $4,500.00. The paint is original and pristine. I found only 1 inch spot in the front bumper that paint was rub off but not peeling. Interior was as also pristine with original working Jaguar cassette except for both front seats shown age due to dry and crack but no rip. The AC works but not as cold as it should. He had local Jaguar dealer fixed for $800.00 last year but there is a still a leak somewhere. The top was installed last year and the inner liner is perfect. The only faults in the engine compartment were valve cover seal leak and sign of oxidation from the valve cover. There is a slight miss idle just like my low miles 1997 XJ6. Its not a true red. I am not sure what paint name is but I love this color; third fault is it needs an alignment. Car drives straight when I let go of steering wheel as highway speed with rezo vibrations; and the last fault is brand new tires but with unknow cheap Chinese made tires.
Owner bought the Jag for his wife but they are having difficulty get in and out due to their age. I was honest and out right told them that I do not expect a perfect car with minor imperfection. They can tell that I am a Jaguar enthusiast and they gladi sold it the Jag to me. . I will post photos this weekend |

Nashville, TN. I will keep this for a while. I will do a major service, detail, and perfect all minor fault that I can find. Price of these pristine XJS is going up and up. I just checked the sold history for 1995-1996 with low miles in the last three months on Ebay. All were sold $10,000.00 to highest $21,000.00

I think you meant nationality. I was born in Vietnam. I have two brothers and both of them are Jaguar Master Mechanics since the mid 1980s. I got the Jaguar bugs from them. Funnily, both of my brothers don't own Jaguars.

Congratulations, looks like you got a great deal. That is probably Flamenco Red paint color, code CFH. My '92 convertible was the same and it's a great color. Hopefully the a/c is just a slow leak and a recharge or replacing some seals will fix her up.

What a deal. A real beauty. 1. My Jeep used to weep refrigerant. A couple o top off's with a can containing a stp leak and it stopped leaking. Cools great. About the same age, 94!! 2. Wow, nice find! Mine's a 95 too and I see you have the original 5 spokes which one of the previous owners of mine, removed for Dayton wires. Some of the chrome on the Daytons are peeling so I'm thinking of going back to the 5 spoke but see they are hard to find.
Also, that was quite a drop in price from the original asking price you posted. How did you work that! |
Many elderly sellers based their sales price on Blue book for used car sell by private seller. I have great luck negotiate and purchased four low miles Jaguar from NewYork, Florida, Michigan, and Alabama. Usually i asked them how much they willing to lower from posted price. From there, I honestly pointed out major faults and asked nicely for additional discount. It always worked being honest, polite, and they know that I am a Jaguar Enthusiast. I do not low ball or picky on minor faults that will annoy sellers. All four low miles Jags I purchased have from 40k miles to 60k miles. All were paid from $4,500 to $6,500.00. I only buy Jags for $0.10 on a $1.00. It helps that my hobby is constant searching for low miles Jags all over the US. It might takes years to run into a good Jag with good price.
