Aerial only comes up 1/3rd way up

Aerial used to come up all the way. For some reason it only comes up less than 1 ft, to the 1st telescopic length. I reckon it's a problem inside it. It still gets good radio fm signal and may be stronger as it is much shorter. Long aerial may break / be broken easier. Any tips available before I start?
TIA again!

Mine does the same. It will come out fully if I pull it while it's extending. I believe the drive gear and push rod is worn.

I had a similar problem and worked the Aerial up and down while spraying it with some WD40 and when it started extending again, I gave the full length of the Aerial a good smear of grease.

If all else fails, you can get a replacement Aerial from these Guys but I think that they may also have some less expensive options available.

Judging from your other post about the washer jets it sounds like your XJS has a common malady...its been sitting too long, unused.

It is very common for a previous owner to have a problem with the car that they either cannot afford to fix or don't want to spend the energy to repair. The car ends up parked and not driven for years. As a result many things start to rot.

The XJS can be a great running car but it needs to be maintained and it needs to be driven on a regular basis.

The electrical system on the XJS is very susceptible to corrosion due to lack of use. Many problems are resolved by getting all of the electrical system to have good connections.

If an XJS has been sitting for a long time the first thing you need to do is go through the electrical system.

1. Remove every fuse and relay. Clean the contacts and reinstall.

2. Disconnect every connector you can find. Clean as needed. Many times just disconnecting an reconnecting is enough to create a clean electrical contact.

3. Disconnect all of the ground wires you can find. Clean the terminals and reinstall.

3. Clean and exercise all of the switches.

4. Items like the power antenna need lubrication and exercise. Clean the antenna shaft thoroughly and then apply some light oil. Run the antenna up and down and it should begin to extend fully and operate smoothly.

5. Things like power window motors, door locks, mirror motors etc. suffer from the same problems. Not enough use allowing corrosion to interfere. A proper cleaning and lubrication is usually enough to bring them back to life.

This work might take the good part of a day or more but it will work wonders and be well worth the time.

Replace the rod. Üroparts.com make the right one. It doesn't cost much and is the better choice. I did it on my X308 a couple of days ago... Self explaining.

Try Orangeblossom's solution first; lubricate it top to bottom. WD40 collects grime like a sonuvagun though - try something lithium or graphite powder based.
