Air Conditioning - Needs work!
 

Hi All,

Ok, summer is coming here in New Zealand and my Air Con is a little worse for the wear. The compressor needs work and I'm not sure of the charge and if any leaks etc,

Can anyone tell me what triggers the actual compressor to switch on and off as I don't seem to be able to see an actual AIRCON switch.

I am guessing that the AUTO function on the RH control switch allows this to turn on as needed but I am not sure.

No separate switch for the a/c compressor. The climate control was designed to run the compressor at all times, even when heating was called for, to dehumidify the air. All incoming air was refrigerated first and then heated as needed.

Since you have an '84 you'll have the 'superheat switch' protection circuit. If the freon level gets low enough the switch grounds-out and melts a three-prong thermal fuse. So, even if re-gassed, the fuse will need to be replaced.

If the compressor is shot there are some modern replacement out there; worth considering.

Be forewarned, though, that even if you get the refrigeration side of the system up-to-snuff it isn't unusual to have problems with the control side of the system. Some easy to trace and repair, others a real torment

Somewhat common failure on the A6 compressors. Decades ago it was common to replace just the hub and clutch. The parts are probably still out there with a bit of Googling. Most just replace the entire compressor these days; new or rebuilt....or new. upgraded design/

All parts are available for the A6. I rebuilt mine a few months backs. New clutch with bearing, plate and coil is like €50. I rebuilt mine for a total of €75. All new parts...

Hey guys,

I have the option to get a later model compressor (Not the A6) from a 1994 6.0L XJS V12 car.

Does anyone know if this is a simple swap or will I have difficulties?

Sorry, I got the parts from Centuryautoair and Rockauto. Just common A6 parts.

The later AC compressor will be an easyish job. You'll want the hoses and bracket to mount it (the rear one).

Get the mounting bracket as well, then it should bolt on will little mods.

Not sure about the XJS 6.0L but the saloon uses a multi rib belt not a V belt

XJS uses a V belt (at least my 1994 does)
