This annoys me the most on my XJS

The tray underneath the passenger airbag. It always pops open at the most inopportune moments and startles me. The one currently fitted is a replacement, as I thought the original was not latching properly.

does anyone else have this problem? Is there some sort of aesthetically pleasing solution to secure this really well?

Thanks

spikepaga,

New clips that hold the panel to the horizontal bar. That should cure it.

I'm intrigued by your replacement panel. It looks different to a standard one?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul-

The panel is the identical as the original.

I do have new clips at the bar. It becomes unhinged at the top and opens up

Hi Spikepaga

I had exactly the same problem as you and fixed it by inserting a Plastic Rawplug in the hole and then secured it with a Self Tapping Screw

Hi OB

Could I trouble you for some visual aids?

Hi Spike

I can't show you on the actual Car, as She's all bedded down in the Garage at the moment but these Photos should explain it far better than I can

The Green Wall Plug (comes in various sizes) you can probably get them at Wallmart goes in the Hole in the Car which is already there

Then a Self Tapping Screw with a Washer, goes through the Tab on the side of the Shelf (which also has a Pre-drilled hole) and then into the Wall Plug you inserted into the Hole and then just tighten it up with a Screwdriver

Thanks OB, but the passenger side knee panel does not have that hold down, only the drivers....maybe I am not understanding ?

Hi Spike

Maybe its me that got it wrong translating RHD into LHD, I'll have another look at it when I get her out of the Garage

If that is what bothers you the most, go buy a lottery ticket!

You're one lucky fellow.

I was about to pull the trigger on this:

NVENT CADDY SC2E Cable Flange Clip,Spring Steel or the SC4E

but then I came across a parts car that I was able to snag the real clips from.

After doing tons of research it seems that the part above should work...but I don't know.

By the way, those panels look identical to what I have in my 96...what seems to look strange about it?

On the XJS, yes. On my older cars, I expect repairs and items that have to be renewed. But that panel randomly opening stresses the crap out of me.
