aux cooling fan rebuild
2 Attachment(s)
While I've long given up on keeping the car "period correct", I decided to take a shot at fixing the aux cooling fan. Retail these are $300+, and while suitable replacements can be had for much less, I was feeling lazy (as in not willing to go driving around to find one) so I had a go at pulling it apart.
Turns out mine had a simple problem. Both the "brushes" are held in square plastic mounts, and one of my mounts had broken, allowing the brush to go sideways and screw things up. The fix...regardless of how long it might last, was simply a tie wrap to hold the brush so it would only travel up under the pressure of the spring. The picture, as usual, is worth a thousand words. my experience with plastic ties is they get brittle especially in heat.

Yep, in my next moment of energy I'll probably just build up the mount with JB Weld and get rid of the tie wrap. I just wanted to get it running and see if it would come anywhere up to speed. I may ditch it anyway...
Thanks, John |
