Boge shocks - CAC9091 vs C29444
 

So, Boge bought Sachs and now their shocks are made in Mexico. Sachs make two flavors; one called "advantage" the other "touring". I read that the Boge shocks that come in a box labeled "Boge Turbo Gas" are the Sachs Advantage. It's unclear (at least to me) if you can still get the Boge shocks made in Germany.

Welsh Jaguar sells "Boge" PN C29444 for $45 each
Coventry West sells "Boge PN CAC9091 for $80 each.
Other websites say that they are "alternate part numbers"
(like alternate facts? ;-))

I'm confused. Any help sorting this out would be appreciated.

ZF owns Boge, Sachs, and TRW. They have owned Sachs since 2001 so I would suspect any reputation Boge apparently has over Sachs has been false since then. You see lots of ads that say things like Boge/Sachs or Boge-Sachs.

My XJS had mismatched shocks on it when I got it, some factory and some randomly replaced KYBs. For about 5 years they all worked totally fine and the car could eat speed bumps. Now they are all toast.

I have a new set of the Boge/Sachs at $45 from WelshEnt sitting under the Xmas tree, will report results.

I have Boge shocks on my front axle, bought them 2016, they have a Made in Germany stamp on them. Boge still makes stuff in Germany, just not everything. Mine are the CAC ones...

I’m about to buy some shocks and bought some boge shocks for front and rear of my 4.0. They seem ok but not done many miles so can’t give an honest appraisal. These days I take made in Germany as they are decent quality compared to the other stuff that’s floating about. Any input on this subject regarding both front and rear replacements gratefully accepted before I spend my hard earned. Merry Xmas and a happy new year to all

IMO the only shocks that give a factory ride are Boges, and you can get them easily in the UK from Manners, John Gordon Jaguar Spares etc. They are also one of the least expensive. Outside that, if you want to change the factory characteristics, GAZ adjustables are also very good. I have used both, on and off, for a long time and I found that I was adjusting the GAZs to give me the OEM Boge ride! GAZ are top quality, much more expensive, and will last well also. Particularly if you do high hard mileages, which I used to, they stand up to it a bit better than the Boges, I found. But now I am in the low thousands a year, the Boges are great.
After that you are looking at even larger sums for (on the rear) platform adjustable GAZ or AVOs. Again they are really good, but again not better if you want OEM ride, than standard Boges with standard springs.
Cornering, there is nothing in it between any of them, providing the roll bar and springs and suspension fulcrums and rubbers are all in good shape. Quite often people claim a harder roll bar or harder springs improve cornering, but what is really happening is that those bits are masking wear deficiencies elsewhere in the suspension.

Thanks for that Greg. As stated I used boge on the 4.0 and got them at a reasonable price from my local car spares. That’s the route I will take again now.

I believe this is the OPs concern, as everyone seems to like the Boge brand shocks but many seem to have a negative opinion of Sachs. There seems to be a large chance they are exactly the same shock, so OP is confused.

Sachs is just a cheap brand nowadays. They used to be an OEM supplier... After bad quality, they are now I think only manufacturers for aftermarket clutches and co.

As mentioned in my first comment, ZF owns Sachs and Boge and many shocks are sold with titles like "Boge/Sachs." The original post is talking about how many suppliers list Sachs parts numbers for shocks described as Boge and how it seems Boge model X is the same shock as Sachs model Y.

ZF has owned Sachs since 2001 and incorporated them in 2011.

A more specific question . . .
Here is the Welsh ad. Is says Boge. No mention of Sachs. So is this not a Boge?

Idk if that correlates with a Sachs model but the box just says Boge, they are gas shocks with a plastic dust cover as pictured. Made in Turkey.

:icon_pala:i bought a rear set of SACHS about 2 months ago, they replaced BOGES , after some driving i feel as they are to soft, ride is great but they dont have the more solid driving that the BOGES did!

Update - Ordered the full set (2 front, 4 rear) from Welsh for $299.95.
I'll post my opinion after I get them installed.
Lots to do so it might be a while.

What do you use if you have the SportPack suspension? They're also Boge but dark grey not black. I can't find them online.

Boge used to catalog and sell a 'sport' version for the XJS and Series I-II-III sedans. I had a set....quite firm. I actually bought them from a another fellow who found them too firm and, after just a few days, went back to the standard type. This was 12-14 years ago.

The part numbers ended is "-1" rather than "-0" as I recall.

If you want to set the ride to your own exact requirements, I suggest a good adjustable, like GAZ or AVOs.

I am removing the KYB's I put on the front and replacing all my shocks with Bilstein. My 95 didn't come with a rear sway bar but I am adding a factory bar and looking for a little larger front bar. I hope to achieve a little more controlled ride, but not supper stiff.
