Bonnet cable adjustments?
 

The bonnet on my '91 Coupe doesn't quite close as evenly as I would like, with the passenger side sitting a bit proud when latched. In my attempt to make some adjustments to the latch, I managed to almost break the operating cable at the handle. (it was badly frayed to begin with)
Once I replace that cable, I would like to follow up and make the adjustment to the bonnet.
Is it a matter of adjusting the latches or does the cross cable (side to side) get adjusted?

Assuming you have the original style bonnet latch with the lever you pull to tighten down the bonnet, this is what I did:


The driver's side latch acts to pull the (US) passenger side latch and the cross bulkhead cable is attached to the driver's side latch. Get the driver's side nicely adjusted. You screw in or out the stops on the bodywork, having undone the lock nut to provide a stop in the right place.


Once the driver's side is OK, then you adjust the passenger side cable length with the nipple on the driver's side latch, to get the passenger side shutting as you want it.


If all as it should be, it should not be a huge effort on the cabin lever to latch the bonnet. If it is, either you have the stops too high, or the cable to the lever too tight.


The only other problems are if the latches themselves are fixed too high on the bulkhead to pull don the bonnet far enough. If so, their fixing holes are slotted, but the fixings can be hard to undo as they are huge pozis and can easily be rounded off. When I did mine I replaced them with hexagon headed bolts


Finally, the S shaped tang that bolts to the bonnet itself that is grasped by the latch can get bent downwards, thus giving the same problem as a too-high latch; also it can get misaligned horizontally. If so it can be unbolted and adjusted, and you can even flatted the S shape a bit in a vice, if needed. Once right, they never come unaligned until some idiot slams the bonnet!

Just broke my cable as a result of poorly adjusted latches.... Replaced by dealer and hope they understood your method
