Can you Mix Dexron 111 with Dexron U.

Hi Guys

Can you mix Synthetic ATF Dexron 'U' with Non Synthetic ATF Dexron 111

Grant Francis 09-21-2017 05:06 AM

YEP.

Just like Brandy and Coke, just tastes different.

orangeblossom 09-21-2017 06:09 AM

Hi Grant

Cheers!

Looks like I've still got a Bad leak on the Power Steering, as after I topped it up a week ago, half of that just disappeared through standing.

Daim 09-21-2017 06:59 AM

Those amount would be clearly visible under the car. Probably a perished low pressure hose.

Grant Francis 09-21-2017 07:29 AM

I agree with that.

Look around the LH engine mount bracket, the p/steer cooler is tucked in there, and the hoses are now CRAP.

Daim 09-21-2017 07:35 AM

Luckily you can now get ALL the PAS hoses for a RHD new. I bought a set. They require a little bending for a good fit but that is okay for some after market parts.

The cooler seems a very sturdy part which shouldn't really fail. And even if, still available new. I personally would red the lot apart from the rack. New rubbers in the PAS pump, new hoses, new clamps, new heatshields for the hoses, ... Mine were bodged by a previous owner. The high pressure hose was actually clamped together in several areas without the little slip stop edging! Could have popped off any time.

I think all hoses set me back about €190 IIRC.

I've seen a few with return hoses so bad it's a wonder they held any oil at all.

And pressure hoses, too, for that matter......and man, they can really squirt oil all over the place!

Word of warning about pressure hoses:

Some vendors are selling an "updated design" part that looks different but is "supposed" to be a correct replacement and fit properly. My conclusion is very different after doing battle with the installation....which is no pleasure cruise under the best of circumstances.

My advice is to seek out the exact replacement hose or have your existing hose/pipe assembly re-done at a hydraulics shop.

Cheers

Ditto!!!

Yup, my Jeep "blew" out a pressure hose a few years back. What a mess. Replacing it not too bad. The nut at the box was in a tight spot and I could not get enough torque on it with a short wrench to open it. I asked myself, "what would a pro do"? Quick, "cut it free!!! I have a neat lttle tool with a chunk of hack saw blade in a handle fro tight spots. It fit and made short work of the alloy tube part. That exposed the nut to a deep socket and extension. Now, I had leverage aka torque. Easy out....
Restored in reverse, sans the cut, Yahoo, no leaks. More work in cleaning up than the fix!! In olden days, the "meister" would assign the apprentice the cleanup. .

Hi Guys

Cheers!

No time to reply to you all at the 'mo' got to fix the Merc my 'Daily Driver' but last night I parked her on dry ground and this morning quite a big patch of Oil underneath.

I've taken some Photos from various Angles and will put them up on my 'Cherry Blossom' thread later, where hopefully you will be able to pinpoint the leak.

But I cannot upload the Photos just yet, as I'm just a bit covered in Petrol at the moment and if I pick up the Camera, then it might start to melt.

Only got one clean finger left for typing.

Hi Doug

Cheers!

How much of a job is replacing one of these hoses?

Any tips on fitting would be appreciated.

Could I just use a Flexy hose all the way through, as I'm not concerned about keeping her original.

Hi Carl

I've never replaced one of these before, looks like one of those 'Interesting!' Jobs.

Daim 09-21-2017 11:18 PM

If you look into your engine bay mate, you'll see the PAS pump has two hoses attached to it. One is clamed on one is screwed in with a nut. The clamped one is a low pressure. This comes from the power steering cooler mounted on the front axle subframe. The cooler is fed by another low rssure hose from the steering rack.

All you've got to do is trace it back. If you look in ny thread, you'll find the pictures where I complete the front axle. Attached to that are all my new hoses... Ideal to have a look.

catterwaller 09-22-2017 12:19 PM

I changed my PS hoses a while back. Not easy. Ended up dropping the rack from it's mounts to access the connections. That requires loosening the steering shaft u joint through the small opening between the inner fender and frame. When I put it back together the steering shaft was off a spline tooth nor two. I don't think your supposed to be able to put it together that way but I did. I haven't gone back to reset it yet so my wheel is off center about 5 degrees.
