Hello,

There's a NON-running 1988 XJ-SC available for $1500 in NJ. Obviously, I need to assume the worst, a complete engine rebuild (minimally). The interior needs replacing (targa "stuff" is expensive I know), and a respray required.
Do you think it's worth considering?
I haven't been to see it yet but would have to pay for all the necessary work since I'm a complete n00b with zero mechanical knowledge.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

That is entirely up to you. If it were me, I'd pass. The whole thing sounds terribly expensive to repair just from your description and that is without looking at it. If you don't mind putting a lot of money into a car that will not have a lot of value in the long run, then by all means keep another Jaguar on the road. They are absolutely cool cars because of the top but aside from that............

An XJS is not like a typical American car when it comes to restoration. Rebuilding a V12 is crazy expensive. Parts for the XJS are not as easily and cheaply available as a Mustang or Camaro. If you have to pay someone else to do the work you will have far more into the car than it will ever be worth in your lifetime.

In your situation I would suggest that you save your money and buy a running XJS that needs minimal mechanical work. If it needs paint then that cost is the same as any other car. Whatever you do look very closely for RUST. Rust repair can be as expensive as engine repair. If its rusty walk away.

There are many good XJS's around. Save your money and take your time to find a good one. You will be much happier.

There are relatively few things more expensive than a cheap Jaguar...

 

How true!! After owning several of these over the years, I simply can't imagine the cost if I had to pay someone to do the work for me. Pretty pricey doing it myself. I've always agreed with the statement that the least expensive thing you ever do to your Jaguar is buy it.

 

I would also pass on that. I have an 87 XJSC, and love it. But I waited awhile and found a very nice example.

Getting a V12 professionally rebuilt could easily run you over $10k. A nice (but not show-quality) paint job is another $7k. Interior and cabriolet specific parts, looking at another 4-5k easily. Simply not worth it.

A very nice example can be had for around $12-14k.

 

If you will be paying someone else for repairs, get the best car you can find, or afford. I have spent many hours working on my Jag, if I were paying someone else, it would be about $100 for each of those hours.

 

Cheap Jaguars are really only holes in your driveway you throw money into.
