Which clutch master cylinder?

Hi all,

I need to replace the clutch master cylinder on my 1990, 3.6, XJS, VIN 166673 (see separate post).

There seem to be a choice of two units; CAC 8091 and CBC 6377. Parts websites and photos are contradictory on which is required for my car and there may even be differences between the hydraulic outlets on LHD and RHD cars.

My car has the Teves ABS braking system as opposed to the Girling servo system which I think may have something to do with which clutch master cylinder is required.

Thanks for reading and all thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,
LeeP

The Jaguar parts catalog shows the 6377 for cars from VIN 148945 and later. It shows the 8091 for VIN 148944 and earlier

Doug, many thanks for responding.

Yes, 148944 does seem to be a milestone for the master cylinders. My own parts catalogue (1975-1991) just states 8091 with no reference to 6377 and some of the parts websites are contradictory but overall I'm thinking you are correct on 6377. Time will tell.

Hi Lee,

As mentioned by Doug, the Jaguar website seems very clear about your clutch cylinder being CBC6377. See attached. And still from Jaguar if you wish!

Good luck

Paul

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for this.

Yes, I also now think that 6377 is the one for me. Ordered one from Jaguar Classic parts today and await with excited anticipation.

I think the key difference between the two alternative parts is whether you have the Girling (servoed) brake system, in which case you need 8091, and the AP / Teves ABS system when you need 6377. The bracket for the clutch damper is different between the two braking systems as is the direction of the exit pipe from the master cylinder.

Fingers crossed this will sort my clutch drag.

Cheers,
LeeP

Many thanks to Doug and Paul. 6377 is the one for this car.

Thanks also to Jaguar Heritage Parts. Ordered online last Monday and ready at 08.00 the following day at my local Jaguar dealers and no postage. First time I have used them - impressed.

All reassembled and I think all is ok just want to drive for a bit first.

LeeP
