Day One...new Jag ownership begins!
 

Ok...so I joined the forum as I know I will need the info...have joined others in the past and the knowledge on this sites in invaluable, needless to say as you all know I am sure

So my story...inherited the Jag from a old dear family friend, completely unexpected. It was an AZ car almost all its life, was purchased and garaged kept in 2011 in PA and now its mine. 1989 XJS coupe...

Its getting the once over and changing all the drive belts, fluids, etc to make sure its good to go. Luckily for me it was never "parked" and sitting for long periods of time and seems to run frighteningly smooth! Quite amazing really, of course that's to a first time owner...was expecting alot more engine noise from a V12.

Soon will be tagged and on the road and will update. Seems the only thing I need so far is a new PS Pump...tires are ok but I will replace them as well. It has 235/60/15 and I have read here about the options between those and the 215/70/15 so that's the first "option" I suppose I will tackle :icon_fryingpan:

Needs a good bath and cleaning...

Speaking of which...the leather looks "good" but used of course...it has been sitting a little bit and needs a serious cleaning but don't want to use anything too harsh on the leather. I personally like the "used" look of leather so just want a good product that will clean it, moisturize it, and keep it pliable...any suggestions? Prob just buff it out a bit as the original paint looks really good actually...lucky there

Try Leatherique. They make wonderful cleaners, conditioners and dyes that will be an exact match for the unfaded factory colors.

I recently went through that whole tire selection extravaganza. I ended up going with 215/70r15 Goodyear Comforted Touring tires on mine. It's the second car I've had them on, and I'm very pleased with both them and the price.

Seems they all are fairly similar (tires) until you get to the Pirelli P600 then its four times as much lol per tire...its just a touring car for me...just want something quiet and smooth and maybe good in the rain as I live in S Fla... so snow tires are not a big deal for me!

Prob just going to get a set of decent tires, drive it around for a while, see how she is and what she likes and does not like then go from there....:)

I don't like the high profile sidewall and skinny tread area of the stock size 215/70, and it's near impossible to find 235/60 15s with a 96 load rating, and anything more than an H speed rating. I've had 225/60R15 Michelin Pilots on my daily driver for several years, and they are the best all-around tire I've ever had on my Jags. They grip well, wet traction is outstanding through about 75% of the wear, and they are quiet, well-mannered tires. The total diameter is a half inch smaller than the stock size, so they make the speedometer read 2% faster than my actual speed, but, I can live with that.

However, when I needed to replace two of my tires a couple weeks ago, I discovered that Michelin (like so many other tire manufacturers), have stopped producing performance tires for 15 inch rims. After scouring the internet for several days, I only found a handful of choices available, and finally decided on the Accelera Alpha 225/60R15:

They have the right load rating, are V speed rated, the tread pattern is aggressive, and looks like it will channel water effectively. At $79.20 each, they are also inexpensive.

If I like them, I'll buy a couple more for the front in a month or so. If I don't like them, I'll either buy one of the other 2 or 3 other 15 inchers still being made, that meet my criteria, or, I'll get busy refinishing that set of 17 inch XJR wheels I have, so that I can have a better selection of rubber to choose from.

Yes I have been having a hard time finding those sizes with decent load and speed rating!!

Thanks a lot, thats a big help...i would prefer to stay with 60's as opposed to the tall skinny 70's but like you say, getting really tough to find them with decent ratings
