Differential, rebuild or replace???

HI all,

It appears that the output shaft on the left (driver) side of the 94 XJS is going out. There is a noise and the tire rocks a bit too much. I took it over to a brake shop (hoping the brakes had an issue), but the brakes are great. The fellow says I should replace the whole differential otherwise I will have the same problem on the other side at some point.

So, any thoughts? Should I just seek to get that side repaired or seek out a whole new/used/rebuilt diff.. Any recommendations as to where and best price to get one?

Thanks,

Tony in NM

In those circumstances l would be rebuilding both output shaft assemblies, a fairly straightforward task. That is assuming there were no other issues with the diff.

It's a lot easier to replace the stub axle bearings than to replace the diff!!!!!!!!!
The output shaft bearings can be replaced with the diff in-situ. Just tilt the halfshafts out of the way, the rotors are already moved outboard on the 1994MY.

Can one buy a complete stub axil (aka the output shaft) and it's plug n play. Or what parts would I need to rebuild the axil myself?

Tony
