Question FUSE ISSUES 93 XJS Convertible

1993 XJS Convertible Straight Six:

Only have the “Drivers Manual”....cigar lighter and its base doesn’t work, cleaned contacts, cleaned connections to assembly, still nothing....I’m thinking it is a fuse. Without repair manual, I cannot locate all of fuse boxes. I’ve located driver’s side small fuses in the engine bay, but no legend to tell me what is what. If anyone can help, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Also, need to find a new key fob, or figure a method to restore the one I have.... I added a new fob A23 battery, but it doesn’t work reliably. It works sometimes, not at other times. I feel like a fool, because I cannot simply address these things completely.

Hi JD

The Fuses you are looking for are underneath a drop down Flap (That undoes with a Coin) which is right underneath the Passengers Knee Pad

The Cigar Lighter is Fuse No1 10amp

Can't help you with the Key Fob, I've got the same problem myself

Fuse location etc should be in the driver manual. When you say the fob works sometimes, just check where and when..... the range of the fob is very short, maybe 10 feet Max. Nothing like a modern cars. Key fobs come up on Ebay every now and then. or try here. Check that you get the correct frequency

I bought an aftermarket fob for my 96 from keylessrides.com, or someplace like that. I don’t typically carry it/use it, BUT it does work from a much longer distance than the OEM. I does not look like the OEM at all, if that matters to you.

Thumbs down

Well, I read or watched a bit on car security. Remotes was the point. Crooks have scanners to find the frequency and unlock and in some versions, even fire up the car!!!!

I kinda liken it to matching up a universal TV remote. That might be no longer possible!!

My Jeep has a fob I played it a bit. It was easy to synchronize. Tricky to replace the batteries. Two "medical" disc type. Abandoned, ain't worth more battery $'s !!;
And worse yet. the security issue...

Old guy, old cats, a key is just fine!!!

Thank you much, I'll see what I can dig up, and let you know.. I couldn't identify it in the Drivers' Manual, but I could've missed it.

Good Morning! I wanted to let everyone know, your help allowed me to find out and repair the problem! THANK YOU ALL!! The panel (where the glove compartment WOULD BE actually pulls down, and it is hinged, inside on the left side, are several fuses/relays. The small black box on the left with the Jaguar leaping symbol has a top that needs to be removed. When you do, you see the fuses (22 of them) and the little black box top contains an orange "fuse puller". I went to number 16, a 10amp fuse, and pulled it. It is the "Cigar Lighter" fuse. The fuse "bridge" was crumpled up and no longer connected the two sides of the fuse. Headed down to Walmart, got three fuses for 2.95, and replaced the bad one. The Cigar Lighter works like a charm!

That being said, the problem is only half-finished. The next thing is to get the radio to actually PLAY......the radio has power (when you turn it on, the display lights up, and my antenna goes up....but the radio itself starts playing, then.....no sound.......not sure what this problem is. Once I get that done, I can actually listen to something in the car!

Thank you again.

Question

Starts playing, but no sound??? Do you mean lights up but does not make any noise??
For some odd reason, among others, I need to crank up the voulumn knob to get a audible sound. And, that with my best aids in my ears!!!

Oh, the reception thing. Try AM and FM.

One more. CD or cassette??? Each of my older cars uses the latter. try yours.
If no noise, it is a speaker wire issue or a head internal problem. tis possible fr one or the other to fail...

At one time, I had a ton of these with ether one or the other no good. Why???
