Engine wiring harness, not EFI harness
Does anyone know of a schematic or DIY on rewiring the engine ( mine's a 1985), other than the EFI? I'm taking about the air conditioning, sensors, alternator, etc. I've found several guides for the EFI , but nothing on the rest. The factory schematics don't really show groupings, connectors, etc.

Thx. Jon Do you have the S57 wiring guide? It's a good stand-alone wiring guide...much better than what you'll find in the large shop manuals, and has at least some of what you need. It shows roughly where the junctions/connectors are and has a (very) rough map (so to speak) of how/where the various looms are routed. Are you repairing an engine bay fire or.....? Cheers DD |
I should add that the S57 guide is LHD/ USA-centric. Any differences you'd have in a RHD/ROW car ...if that's what you have....are not shown

I have all of the references above. I'm really looking for something that is from each major connector that feeds the engine and ancillaries. Nothing the factory put out really does that. No fire; things are just getting "crusty".

I've not seen any Jaguar tech publication....for that era of car....with that degree of detail. Others will chime in. FWIW.... I've had several Jag engine bay looms opened up for repair (in fact, I working on one right now) and in all cases the majority of the wiring was in perfectly good shape. It's just a matter of identifying the crusty bits, clipping them off, and soldering in new sections. Typically, in my experience, involves the ends of wires (and the connectors) most exposed to engine heat. Go back into the loom a few inches and you'll find pristine wires. I mention this because you said you were "rewiring", which, if taken literally, might mean a lot of unnecessary work...as opposed to "repairing as needed". Cheers DD |

I have to agree with Doug above in the 'If it 'aint broke, don't fix it.' sense. But I'm also planning a new loom for the non-EFI wiring, so I won't discourage you! I don't think any diagram is going to be as helpful as diving in and opening up the loom in your engine and start taking notes. There's a lot of variation apparently. Anyway, here's a fun picture.

This is how I would approach making this harness.
On my car the harness goes through grommets, not the one in the engine bay the one behind the front guard, you will need to remove the splash guard behind the front wheel I would open the loom far enough out for easy access on the engine bay side and check all the wires are all different colour coding, alternatively wrap tape around each wire and label it. Cut the harness and remove it from the car. Peg it out on a board and make your new one. I would then add a connector either Deutsch or Amphenol. |
