exhasut "olives"
Doing some work on the exhaust, and as one can see by the photo, it's time to replace the old exhaust olive.
So how much should one crush the olive (by tightening the bolts on the flanges)? Thanks, John 1987 XJ-S V12 https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...f5b2ae57a0.jpg New on left, old on right. |
You shouldn’t crush it at all! Your old one is a little shorter because bits of it are literally missing. Tighten up those bolts on the exhaust nice and snug, and not any extra |
Exactly that ^
Those aten't 'crush olives'. Clean up the contact areas, maybe apply a bit of exhaust fitting paste and tighten until tight. Done. |

FYI the only place "crush olives" are used on the XJS is between the top of the downpipe and the cast iron manifold. This is the parts I am referring to: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-XJ...cAAOSwueJbT2H8 Jaguar ones are the best, but unbelievably are NLA from Jaguar themselves - in spite of the fact many different Jaguar models use them. You can still pick genuine ones up on ebay etc though. |
Nevermind. I just realized it was for an 87 v12....

Thanks for the input guys. Just finished up the left side exhaust today. I didn't "crush" the olive, but just firmly tightened the flange bolts, and that was enough to seal things. So I now have the stock exhaust on the right side, and an electric exhaust bypass and new muffler on the left side. I've got the parts on order to do the same for the right side, so it should all be complete before it gets chilly here.

You have an electric exhaust bypass, and all we get is a picture of your Rusty olives? Get back out in the garage and take us a picture |
exhaust olives
Not sure what's going on. I've tried to upload photos four times. The last time I resized them to under 500KB JPEGs and it still wouldn't work. I can import them into the attachment editor OK and add the captions. When I hit the UPLOAD button, the attachment window goes away and that's that...nothing.
Any thoughts? It worked fine for me just a few days ago. Thanks, John 1987 XJ-S V12 |

Hope these pics go through.
Thanks, John 1987 XJ-S V12 https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...bfa3461bc2.jpg Both the exhaust cutout and the cutout switch assembly are Summit Racing products. I've not done the wiring yet, thus the hanging cable. The angle of this photo makes the cutout motor assembly look much lower than it actually is. The stock exhaust setup can be seen in the background. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...289667609b.jpg I doubt that I'll find a premade tailpipe to divert the exhaust gas down, so I may have to make one myself. It's a pretty tight fit in there. I'm not all that great of a welder, but nobody will be able to see it anyway. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...d28246aa78.jpg My requirement for shopping for a new muffler were simple, as short as possible with offset intakes out outlets. I was afraid that they might turn out to be too loud (in non-cutout mode that is) but they are no louder than the stock mufflers. |
