Default Exhaust manifold removal

Hi all,

Wow, am I having a battle removing the L/H exhaust manifold from the fuel injected 1978 RHD Daimler Double Six.
The exhaust gas recirculation riser has rotted out so the manifold has to come off.
Obviously the top nuts are easy to remove although mostly the stud is unscrewing from the head. Some of the bottom one are extremely difficult to access made worse but the stud unscrewing and fouling the exhaust manifold before it is fully unscrewed.
Are there any tricks of the trade or techniques to assist me in removing it? Should they come off one at a time or as one unit?

on a brighter note I have just reinstalled both fuel tanks that were badly rusted. I have treated them and used a fuel tank sealer as well as new fuel senders. It is not a pleasant job. The forty year old hoses were extremely hard needing to be cut off. Whilst installation looks easy enough it took quite some time.

any advise on exhaust manifold removal greatly appreciated?

al

The rear ones are the worst. I found it easier to remove the engine and that is not kidding.

Btw. I'd recommend you to use the XJ section of this forum, as the XJ-S has a tighter and more cramped engine bay. So it might be easier on a Series II/III to remove stuff.

I removed and replaced the exhaust manifolds on my '87 XJ-S V12 a few years ago.

The only way I could get them off was by putting a piece of wood, somewhat larger than the dimensions of the oil pan (and a stiff/thick piece of wood) on a pallet jack. I loosened the bolts on the motor mount, and slowly jacked up the engine until I could just get enough clearance to get the manifolds off the studs and lift the manifolds out.

I don't know anything about the car you are working on, so the above may not be applicable at all.

Good luck with it,

John
