Facelift Speaker Size (1996 XJS)

Thanks to Jake21, I was able to upgrade from a stock 5-1/4 sized speaker to a 6-1/2 Alpine Speaker.

What I learned is that the hole for the speaker is 5" in diameter, so any speaker with a cutout dimension of less than 5" will work.

The Alpine SPS-610 fit, but not all 6-1/2" speakers will. The typical speaker retail websites will tell you what the cutout dimensions are for a given pair of speakers. The Alpines were 4-15/16".

Don't worry about depth. There are no speakers that won't fit. There's plenty of room.

Undoubtedly, 6-1/2" speakers will sound better than 5-1/4" speakers.

Again, thank you Jake21!

I have the same SPS-610's on the back and Focals 165 on the front, both 6 1/4. Now that I have a new head unit with a little amp they sound decent. I like the Alpines much better than the Focals

I put 4 new Alpine SPR-60s and a CD133-BT head unit. I don't have a separate amp, but it doesn't seem to hinder the quality. They sound fantastic. You will have to upgrade the BT firmware if you are running an iPhone with ios6. that part is a little fiddly, but if anybody needs directions, shoot me a line and I can guide you through.

As an update to an old thread, I swapped my front speakers out to JBL GTO620, and I am much happier with the sound. I'm not an audiophile, but my classic rock catalogue, including a healthy dose of Springsteen really sounds much better. I chose not to install the component speakers. Wanted to keep it simple. I am still using a compact Alpine KTP-445u amplifier that was really the best add on for the sound system in the car. Easy to install and not difficult to hide.

One of hobbies (used to be my profession when I was a young tike) is building HIFI including designing speakers.

I have a spare pair of Fostex FE206e, which I am planning to install in the front doors. I may need to space them out a bit I have not checked the depth in the door yet.

With the changes you guys are doing by adding larger speakers in the front, will the original grill and chrome round bezel remain the same?

In my case(s) the answer is yes.

For me it's a no. I will most likely need to space the speakers out from the door slightly, so I'll make spacers and new grills
