Facelift Transmission Mount Replaced!

Job complete.

Oddly enough, both springs looked good, as did both sets of rubber bushings. Even though JDHT only specifies one lower springs seat (CBC1883) and one upper spring set (CAC9393), my assembly had two of each, protecting each end of the springs. I used the one new one that I bought where specified, and re-used the old one (after a cleanup) at the other end.

The springs also looked just fine. I ordered two new ones anyways, (CBC4744 and CBC4745) but was disappointed to learn I had purchased two CBC4744s. One of the springs was incorrectly packaged. Damn you eBay! I made that purchase awhile ago. I'll see if I'm able to return it.

What was a complete disaster was the old MHG7566AA part. It was our old friend Jaguar Orange Foam. It had completely disintegrated. The URO part I replaced it with is rubber, so from the looks of the other rubber parts, this is probably the last time I am going in there. Everything other than this "Foam Buffer" looked in good shape.

Other than making sure you have plenty of degreaser on hand, it's pretty straightforward except for two things:
1: you may want to have some kind of black paint on hand to spray over any of the areas that have been scratched off by the metal coils over the years. I use a self priming black epoxy spray paint.
2. This is more important. In order to re-assemble the transmission mount parts and bolt it back together for re-installation, you will need at least two M8-1.25 bolts at least 1-1/2" (or 40mm) long. You'll also need a clamp. That will hold the assembly tight enough so you can install the original bolts back in. You'll assemble it with the long bolts, locking everything in place, and then clamp it together even tighter so you can work that third (original) bolt in. Then replace the remaining long bolts with the shorter bolts. You have to align three parts with holes to make this work. If you know a better way, I'd love to hear it.

After that you will need a jack to help press the assembly back in place.

I did not need to take apart any exhaust piping, or anything else. There are four 13mm bolts holding the assembly together, then, once out, the assembly sandwich is held together with three 10mm bolts. Couldn't be simpler.

Ultimately if you choose to do this you will have to decide whether or not you want to replace the following:
2 x CBC1883
2 x CAC9393
1 x MHG7566AA(absolutely need to replace)
1 x CBC4744
1 x CBC4745

I used OEM springs, URO rubber parts everywhere else.

I used to hear an audible click from the transmission when putting the car out of Park and into Drive. All gone. Transmission changes are smooth out of Park now.

Evidently this was a long overdue job.

Also just did this job with the helpful assistance of Vee’s post above. Well, my mechanic did it for 60 dollars for his labor in less than an hour. Totally worth it.

In addition to all the parts above, I also replaced CAC9344 x 6 - the little buffers at the very top and the very bottom , as I heard these are important too on another post. . They where already missing in my car at the bottom. The ones on top where all there, but still got replaced.

In my case MHG7566AA was completely gone and non-existent, except for black mushed up rubber. All the other parts where there....Apparently at some point mine was replaced with a black rubber one and it failed too. I don’t have any record of this ever being done, and I have records from day car left the factory and was brought home......There was no orange residue at all.

Car was clunking at bumps, which has completely stopped. Car had a slight vibration idling at red lights, and that is gone too. I thought the car had died at a stop after I had this done today. Shifting is noticeably less jerky and like Vee explains, the car does not jolt when the selector is moved out of PARK. This is a definitely must do addition to the list of items to be replaced on a AJ16 XJS.

This is what’s I bought and replaced:

  • MHG7566AA URO from EBAY
  • CBC1883x2 Welsh Branded from EBAY
