Facelift XJS - Mystery AC Component
 

I was recently driving out to and from the beach with a passenger and he got a droplet of water on his leg. We then noticed that the carpet was getting wet on the side opposite the passenger door.

I recently checked to see what was doing and I believe water was coming out of this blue rubbery part hidden behind the knee bolster on the passengers side. The water leaked out of the bottom joint because it had slid out of place. I was able to push it back in without too much effort. (The blue thing is extremely soft)

What is this blue thing and should I ziptie it into place?

More then likely your condensate drains need un-plugged and the water is rising up and venturing out there at the bottom of that attachment. It's not to my knowledge supposed to be water tight so zip tying it will not fix the problem.

I have a problem with the blue ducts on the drivers side. The blue duct connects to the blower motor and directs the air to the evaporator core. The duct does not have a good seal around the blower motor or the tube that directs air into the evaporator core. This is causing the AC to blow very weak since all the air is is not directed into the evaporator and out the vents.

I should create a new thread.

The condensate was definitely dripping down from the blue rubbery tube, not up from the black piece it is supposed to be connected to.

Does anyone know where that water exits? I guess I can figure that part out, but I do inted on checking for any obstructions.

If the facelift cars are the same as the early cars....I suspect they are.....the evaporator will have two drain tubes that poke thru the floor boards a few inches aft of where the engine and transmission join together. A straightened coat hanger gently inserted and manipulated will usually clear any clogs.

Be ready for a gush of (possibly smelly and yucky) water. Keep your face clear of the drains :)

I fashion a tiny hook at the end of the coat hanger to pull out whatever is clogging the tubes....usually congealed slime, decomposed leaves, and the like.

Unclog the drain tubes first. That is the most probable reason it is leaking water on the carpet, at least it was on my '96.

If you have weak air, you may also want to check that both fans blow. If o one stops then the other just moved air to the other side and not out. The blue boots should not leaking any air from the fan to the center ac evaporator/heater.

I was having the same problem, when I took my heater unit out to change the evaporator, there was a great deal of debris pollen in there , I regularly cleared out the drain holes but there was a good 1/2" of dirt in there so it would immediately block up again. now its all done and I have pollen filters fitted, it should never clog up again.
