Fluid Capacity
 

Hi all,

I tried searching here for the correct engine oil capacity for a 93' xjs 6 cyl but couldnt find one. The manual that came with the car says 10.5 us quarts. Is that correct? it seems like a lot.
Also it says the amount of transmission fluid needed is 9.6 us quarts and the amount of coolant needed is 21 quarts. Is that correct too?

10.5 is the V12
The straight six aj6 and aj16 is still probably more than your neighbor's civic though.

I believe it is 8.5 quarts with a filter for a 4.0

believe the drain plug torque spec is 30 ft/lbs and the coolant fill is more like 10 quarts for the six cylinder. Not sure about the tranny though

for both the 3.6 and 4.0 litre motors, engine oil with filters is 8liters, manual transmission is 1.4litres and Auto is 4liters regardless of motor size, hope that helps.

My 3.6 is 8.4ltrs to get it to the full mark after any engine oil change over a lot of years. the book states 8ltrs, but the books are always a guide.

The 9.5 for the ZF trans is for a "dry fill" siuation. Again, mine takes 4.9Ltrs whenever I drop and fill it.

Coolant, 21ltrs seems a tad high. OK for the HE V12. I would estimate 15 to 18ltrs, again for a "dry fill". About 10ltrs when I do mine, but I seriously dont measure it that carefully.

As long as the item I am servicing is at the "full" mark, what went in is of little consequense.

"Dry fill" is deemed a totally dissmantled unit, and being filled for the FIRST time. I rarely see specs for "service fill" these days.

Again Spot on Grant, especially on the coolant. I changed mine not so long ago and even removing the bottom hose and back flushing then injecting with compressed air to remove as much as I could, I only managed to replace just over 15liters. Sorry should add its a V12 HE not a six.

Thanks guys. I thought the oil was a little high for the 6 cyl. Its weird that in the owners manual that came with the car that they list the capacities for the 12 cyl when I have the 6 cyl.

You really need to go and buy the proper Parts & Service Manual on DVD from Jaguar Heritage. You're going to be doing a lot of work on the car to get it up and running as a daily driver. It is just madness to try and run and run an XJS without the proper manual. You won't even know the torque settings of the wheel nuts, the brake calipers or the sump nut. (which often ends up with owners splitting the sump through overtightening. Very expensive!).

Make the purchase of the manual your first priority. You won't regret it.

Back then MOST of the XJ-S's were V12 in most markets.

My thoughts are that the book has been swapped out?????.

I use oil company websites for a guide to any car I am unsure about. My usual is "Nulon.com.au" then go to the lube guide drop downs, and follow the blanks. Again, the wording says it all, "GUIDE".
