Full Throttle and KickDown Switches 2 vs 3 leads???

2 Attachment(s)
Guys I am not sure what to do here. Maybe I am just new to this. I am replacing both the Full throttle and Kick Down microswitches. the originals have 2 leads coming out of them and I have two wires for each. But the new switches have 3 leads coming out of them. Did I get the wrong switch and if not which one is extra? The car is a 1988 XJS H&E. Attached is the pic of original and new one.

Thanks for the help

It is very common for replacement switches to have the extra terminal....thus making them suitable for a greater variety of purposes.

The terminals are probably marked NO, NC, and COM (normally open, normally closed, and common)

For the two applications you have in mind attach one wire to "COM" and the other to "NO".

Where did you get that STDP (three terminal) switch from please? They are needed for the handbrake warning light circuit, and are unavailable from the usual specialist suppliers

Greg, many years ago when l was running 4 speed O/D box in my series 1 xj12 l wired the overdrive through the kickdown switch by changing it from NO to NC. The stock kickdown switch has the provision for the change by removing a small blanking piece and moving the spade blade from NO position to NC position. As l remember the rivets need to be removed to split the switch.
Having said all that they are a very common microswitch.

Thanks Baxtor. The handbrake needs a three terminal jobby, I am glad I shall be able to get one OK.

A quick perusing revealed this....which might fill the bill. But I'm on my first cup of coffee and still a bit blurry-eyed
