Handbrake Adjustment

2 Attachment(s)
I have read a lot about the hand brake adjustment methods. The location of the lever adjustment nuts was not clearly described in any of them & not where I suspected. On my 1988 XJSC They are under the carpet about 8 inches behind the pivot point of the lever. For the first time in 15 years, the e-brake now works! I will try to add sone photos.

This is only a primary adjuster, there are two more bolts, one on each parking brake mini-calipers. These connect the parking brake pads across the braking rotor. I am planning to tighten mine a turn, or so, because adjuster on your picture is not making my parking brake hold strong enough.

Yes, I found those too, but the pads weren't worn, & after reading a recommendation to try the "easy adjustment" first, I looked harder for the primary adjuster. In the future I may need to adjust the mini caliper bolts too. I almost never use this brake (it's flat around here). Once it failed a safety inspection for not working, but (at that time) I just went to a different shop. I'm glad to have it working properly now though. Good luck on yours.

Do you have any pix of the return spring location for 1988 xjs. Handbrake assembly I can't figure it out.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I should have said Handbrake lever assembly. LHD 1988 XJS

There are two return springs on inboard braked cars. One on each of the caliper levers with the other end attached to the cage. Here is a close-up of one of them:

The primary adjuster behind the driver's seat on the inner sill is to get the cable length into the correct range for the caliper levers to be able to engage the handbrake pads. The theory then is that the self adjusters within the handbrake caliper mechanism then come into play to keep the mechanism correctly working as the pads wear. On my car I had to tighten up the primary a few times after the caliper rebuild as the entire mechanism bedded in.

Thanks for your help. However I guess I did not explain my problem. The return spring is on the opposite side of the switch side.
I have downloaded a web page the shows an exploded view of the Handbrake lever assembly. This is my first attempt at sending a picture..bare with me..

Item 4 handbrake lever return spring.

Doug,
Item # 4 is the right one. Can't find anything that shows how it is connected.
Thanks

I dunno.

It's been ages since I've monkeyed about with an XJS handbrake lever. Seems to me, though, that one tang must fit into a hole in the stationary base and the other tang into a hole in the lever itself (?)

Someone who knows what they're talking about will chime in.

Cheers

Waking up this thread hoping someone out there is watching.

I intend to drop the cage on ol cherry pie today and the one thing I am uncertain about is how the cable, the one that needs to be detached before dropping the cage, detaches... I'm afraid, generally, but more afraid of getting started and hung up with something I've never seen before. On my back, under, in a tight space, if ya know what I mean?

What's the set up where the cable meets down there?

JayJagJay 06-11-2019 10:04 AM

Also, one other question.

How much clearance does one neeeeeed,,, to absolutely clear the cage from under the body on the job??? I've seen the number before but cannot remember.

Thank ya all so much. Yup, I've been away a while sorting out the "kinks" on this thing...

+1 on the thanks. This saved my bacon. I have to go thru a safety inspection when purchasing a vehicle and registering it and they failed my attempt because of the emergency brake.

Glad it helped!

The only Safety Inspection I ever had that checked my safety brake was once at Walmart. That's why I looked (better) for the location of the adjustment nut and finally found it I hope to get back to working on my 88 XJSC in the "not too distant future". Glad it helped! JT
