hi-beams go out and all lights go black
When applying hi-beams they stay on for about 5 min. and then all lights go out. The low beams and all other lights work fine with no issues. Fault light shows a bulb out but traced everything and found no issues on bulbs. Fault light goes out after a minute and does not come on again until after shutdown and start up and then applying light switch. What is the issue? A relay? Headlamp logic control? headlight low/hi-beam switch on column? Please advise driving me batty to find the answer.

It would help greatly if you gave the year and engine size of the car. However, first check the lamps are correctly fitted and the lamp bases are clean. Then check the ground points for the light units themselves.

Correct, it is impossible to give any advice with out the model of your car, there were many changes made to circuits over the years.
Put the model and features of your vehicle in your signature. |
Headlight issues
I missed giving info on car and model etc. The model is an XJS the year is 1993 and it is a convertible with the 4.0( 6 cylinder engine) I also noticed that the right directional blinks a lot faster than the left, Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Mr. Lucas is about, LOL.
he is somewhat famous around English cars. |
One needs a sense of humor when dealing with a someone who enjoys seeing others' problems. I joined the site for input and giving some output on repairing Jags, not having clueless people trying to make light of someones issues. GET THE POINT

The 1993 has a headlight logic unit. I have head others that have had bad solder joints in this unit. Pull it out and disassemble it.
Using a good light and a magnifying glass inspect all the solder joints on the underside of the PCB. Or you could just re-solder all the joints. Here is a link to the 1993 Electrical Diagrams. http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Elec...Electrical.pdf |
Usually if it flashes fast, that means one bulb is burned out. Some of the US bulbs don't match the European spec (27W vs 21W) and if there is an imbalance front to rear it could cause the fast flash.
I would start by making sure the bulbs are all correct spec and working and go from there. |

Maybe see if higher wattage high beam portions have been fitted? |
At present car is in shop for paint repair and will be able to check out inputs for lighting issues. Appreciate the info from all and will hopefully correct issue in a few days. Thanks to all who responded and if there are any further inputs or suggestion on locating problem please do not hesitate to send info.

Pull all the relays and clean the contacts, worked for me.

headlamps
Checked out the wattages on headlamps, relays and headlamp control module and found no discrepancies. Took apart headlamp control module and circuit board checked out with no cracks or component failure. could this be a ballast failure from heat? Appreciate the inputs and hope to continue to check out grounds and circuit and find the intermittent problem. Will advise if problem is found. Thanks all.

ERC;
Because of your discourtesy to RONBROS, a fellow senior, I'll join him and not even try to help. Carl |
Thanks for your useless reply. You do not seem to comprehend the input from whoever you are talking about and this forum is for helping jag owners and not for a site to discourage people.

Welcome to the forum erc1234,
I'm sure the Lucas comment was intended as a joke, perhaps a thicker skin would help? Please don't neglect to post your intro in the new members section New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum |
Thanks for the input. After working thru a week of checking out the system I really did not take the remarks kindly. I do appreciate your comment and find that it may be best to just not reply to that type of humor.

Holy crap. You know you can catch a lot more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.
Good luck finding a solution to your problem. I hope it works out for you. |
