How taught should throttle cable be?

Mine has a little play. Not very tight. Was wondering because kickdown switch doesnt seem to work when I floor it (esp over 40MPH). Not sure if its the switch, or just not fully extending the cable and causing the switch to trigger.

Any help welcomed.

Virtually zero slack.

As I recall the mounting for the kickdown switch is adjustable as well to help ensure the the level arm of the switch can come into solid contact with the actuating button-thingy on the throttle cable

Also check that the throttle pedal pivot inside the cabin has the bushings in place. If not, the result will be lost motion as the pivot point cocks to one side, and the pedal arm will not provide 'full pull' of the cable.

Cheers

When?

Hey Doug, when you gonna get another XJS? You know its gonna happen!

So I tried to tighten things up via adjusting where the kickdown bracket thing screws in. Made it a tad bit tighter, but still has a little more play than it should. Is there a way I can further adjust this (I think I've seen discussions in this forum saying you can adjust at pedal), or do I have a stretched out cable? Is there an adjust / tighten solution here?

I'm not aware of any cable adjustment other than the obvious one where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle pedestal.....that is, the two nuts at the end of the cable. If you can't take up the slack there then, yes, I'd say the cable was stretched.

We'll see. Maybe. One of these days. I dunno. :-)

I'd love another XJS at some point but my next project is a Ser III V12 sedan.

there is a spec for it, put a very small feeler gauge on the stop and tighten up the slack so you know there is a gap, but its virtually nonexistent
