Default Huge Bang Turning Corner

Something recently has started when I turn a corner or go up a driveway. If the corner or drive is not real level or I am going more than 5-10 mph I get a bang noise from the rear. Seems mostly when turning to the right.

My guess is that the shocks are getting old and tired and have no more cushion left to absorb the differences In the road heights.

Does not happen driving on normal roads.

So do I need new rear shocks or do you think it is something else?

Thanks

"Huge bang"?

That evokes an image of something broken or shifting out of place.

Loose exhaust?

Broken rear suspension mount?

Have you been underneath to look for anything obvious?

Does the car drive/steer/behave normally?

Cheers

Car seems to drive fine. It does feel slightly lower and look the same based on the rear tires.

I have had it over 100mph the other day. Need to blow out the carbon and it helps smooth out the engine.

Forgot to mention it is a 1996 XJS Conv.

Thanks

Have you checked the shock bushings? All eight of them?

I'd put money on the shock bushings as well.

Short of that, I would take a look at the rear vee suspension mounts. They tend to delaminate on one end and separate. You may have to jack the car up from the rear to see it.

Look at each shock absorber, wheels removed. There is a fixing top and bottom which has a steel bush, see if one is missing, or the bolt at the shock top has come loose. I would also look to see if the cage to body mounts have come loose or the rubber has failed. Also look to see if a spring round the shock has broken, or if its locating system has failed. Also check the radius arms bushes and fixings, the rear calliper bolts and handbrake calliper bolts, and the driveshaft UJs and flange bolts to the diff output shafts.

Basically this thread is the best I can do. Jack up the rear end and let the wheels stay on the ground. You should see a pair of cradle mounts on each side. When you jack up the end, you'll see if those cradle mounts have separated. Easy to replace.

I think I found the issue on the Vee Sections.

It looks like separation of the rubber and metal.

Can anyone tell me how difficult and the procedure. It looks to be between body and frame. It looks like separation of the body and frame is required to reinstall new brackets?

Appreciate responses

Thanks

Ah, there you go.

As I recall, it’s not too hard of a job. The mounts shouldn’t require a huge separation of body and frame to liberate them. I’d disconnect the driveshaft, speedometer pickup and perhaps the emergency brake cable, support the car on jack stands, position a jack under the differential, remove the 8 bolts securing the mounts to the body, drop the subframe maybe an inch, maybe less, then replace the mounts one by one and reassemble. This way you could avoid introducing air to the braking system and thus need to bleed the brakes at the end. Not sure how the exhaust will play into it. I suspect that you’ll need to drop the suspension cage so little that you might be able to get away without touching the exhaust but keep an eye on it during the process.

No need to disconnect anything. Once you get the rear up on jackstands and the wheels off, you'll find it's a pretty straightforward job. You can use the jack to position the rear suspension exactly where it needs to be for replacement.

Once word of caution. The Vee mounts will appear to be multidirectional...they are not. If you find the holes are just not lining up, flip it around!

Thanks Vee,

After reading EcbJag got a little concerned. My guess his input was based on on his V-12 not the more friendly twin 6.

Let you all know when finished....May take a while!

Thanks to All for the input

Softball60/Paul...This old man appreciates the help
