I Can't Go Faster Than 79 MPH

Something interesting happened today. Driving home from work I decided to stretch her legs a bit and dropped her into 2nd gear. Ran 2nd all the way out to redline and noticed that the speedo was only reading 79 mph. Backed off and slowed down quite a bit before it came off 79 and started dropping with the car's speed.

I went into 2nd again and this time I'm watching the speed, sure enough gets stuck at 79 again. Tried this a couple more times and it's consistent.

Does this sound more like a sending unit or gauge issue?

P.S. Out of curiosity, anyone know how fast 2nd is @ redline? :D

I'm inclined to say it's the speedo itself. Just a gut feeling.

6500 RPM in second gear should yield about 105-110 mph

Cheers

Im sure you can tell its moving faster when you accelerate, with the speedo banking on 79mph. Definitely a speedo issue

Thanks Doug, that's what I was thinking too. No doubt I was going faster than 79 Brewtech, just a matter of whether it's the sending unit on the transmission or the speedo itself :-)

I'll pull the cluster tomorrow and see if I can manually move the needle past 79 or if it hangs up on something. Excluding an obvious issue, I have a spare cluster that I can rob the speedo out of for troubleshooting.

Poor *******.

79mph in second.

sounds like a first world problem haha

1. See if you can find a nice stretch of road with a cop on it. When he pulls you over, immediately ask HIM of he knows how fast you were going?

2. Until you get this resolved, there will be no time travel for you. I suspect there's something wrong with your Mr. Fusion or the flux capacitor.

The Flux Capacitor has been mended! :D

One of the securing clips from the pillar gauges fell off and got jammed in the Speedo. What are the chances right?
