94 XJS. 170,000 miles, automatic. When car is running and in park & the brake is depressed, there is a loud clicking sound near the gear selector/center console area. When the car is in drive & brake is depressed, the click goes away. I'm thinking it has something to do with the safety interlock thing where the brake has to be depressed to move the gear selector. Any ideas?

 

Right, the click is from the solenoid that releases the gearshift so you can move it out of "P". You'll only hear it when you're in "P" as a 'not-in-park switch' defeats the circuit with the gearshift in any other position.

And, if you ever find yourself unable to move the gear selector out of "Park", there is an interlock bypass.
