My New Jag XJSC V12 [would not start]
 

Hi Everyone,

Over a week ago I purchased my first Jag an 87 XJS cabriole V12 [very good looking car], drove it from St Louis to Indianapolis with no problem at all, got home parked it and last saturday I was ready to take to get it checked and surprise!!! would not start - checked the battery, fuel, used started fluid and still nothing. I am planing to replace the fuel filter, and check the fuel pump.

hi and welcome when i first got mine i accedently kicked the (i think fuel reset ) just in side the drivers door jam red button on top of blak box should be down . if not than i start checking the rest good luck

When you turn on the ignition with the trunk open can you hear the fuel pump buzz for a few seconds ?

I am in the middle of a tank out / fuel pump rebuild currently and this is how I could tell. It happened very suddenly, ie 2pm, drove car, drove perfect. Parked at 3pm. Came to start it again at 7pm and no fuel pump.

Thank you guys for replying. I did check the fuel reset and it was on the right position.
I just turned on the ignition and I can hear the fuel pump buzzing.
Tomorrow I will replace the fuel filter, I do not know if a dirty filter is the source of the problem, but either way needs to be done.
I was wondering if one of the fuel system relays is out.

The next step would be to connect a fuel pressure gauge to your fuel rail to see what pressure you have there...... should be between 35 and 45 psi when running, probably a bit more when cranking.

I'm not sure how the earlier cars are but on my 92 there are 2 relays related to the fuel system.... the first one (EFI relay) is energised if the fuel reset switch is ok, then it supplies power to the second (fuel pump) relay. The fuel pump relay is switched on and off from the EFI computer..... so everything needs to be working to get the fuel pump to run. There are some Jags with 2 fuel pumps but as far as I know on the XJSes it's either all go or no go. The fact that you can hear the pump running is proof the electrics and relays are working.

As your failure mode is not yet known, you may also want to start checking whether you are getting a spark..... the easiest way to do this is to pull a plug lead off, connect a spare spark plug and place it against the block to earth it, crank the car and see if you are getting a spark. You should be getting a nice bright blue spark. Anything kind of weak and or yellow suggests issues with coils, etc
