You will need a 12 point socket, forgot the size, and you will need a very long extension, at least 2 feet. IIRC, there are only two bolts holding it on. One you can get from the front, but the other is a pain. You need the long extension and it has to go between the trans and the tunnel. You will also have to drop the exhaust pipe from the manifold so be sure to order the two gaskets.

When I did mine, I was able to do it on jack stands.

My car had the OE starter, and it was the gear reduction.

7/16 3/8 drive 12 point socket

Getting the old Lucas starter out is challenging, I've only done it in a RHD car, LHD should be easier as you do not have the steering column in the way.

1. Remove RH downpipes.
2. Disconnect wiring from starter
3. remove bolts from transmission bellhouse side top bolt is the 7/16 12 point remove top bolt first.
4 wrestle starter out.

Installing the new reduction gear is sooooo much easier, you can hold it up with 1 hand while getting the bottom bolt in. I used a bit of Plasticine to hold the bolt in the socket.

My local tech says to leave the wires on the starter, and disconnect the wires at the firewall. This is easier for removal and install.

I haven't done it, but I trust him

Can not do that on my 89 because the wiring goes from the alternator to the starter then to the firewall. Removing wiring at the firewall is difficult and the starter would still be connected to the alternator wiring.
