Rack and pinion seal kit installation - advice needed
 

Hello,
I am replacing those Teflon o-rings in the pinion, and looking for tips how to do it.

The old ones were just plastic rings(black), but the new ones(blue) came with a metal ring which looks like goes inside the plastic ring.

Anyone got tips how to install them? I am a little worried about getting first ring all the way without damaging it.

I did my rack a couple of months ago and had no steel rings, these seals are teflon, mine were white. Getting them on is tricky. I slid a clear plastic sleeve over the valve body and slid the rings on.

Be very careful if anything does not seal you will be sending the rack out to have it rebuilt. When I did mine I nicked one of the rack end seals on the rack teeth and it leaked like a sieve.

I am wondering if it make sense to warm rings up in hot water before trying. Also will probably install rings first without backing metal spring/washer, and then try to slid it under. I am worried because getting old rings out was a pita, so I just broke them. I imagine to get first ring down I will need to install-uninstall it three times.

I am also wondering if it is OK to simply cut rings with sharp knife at an angle and install them like that. This is how piston ring is installed in my rack and frankly I do not see why not, Especially with backing spring provided, perhaps that's the reason it is there.

The rack end seal that goes over teeth I installed after coveting teeth with wide scotch. I covered them , slid end washer/cup and then slowly slid ring over oiled scotch one tooth at a time, and then the rest. After that I assembled the 'pipe thing' on the rode. Hope it will work.

Apparently it is a simple and known procedure.. I was googling the wrong thing. The trick is to expand the ring - put it on - resize it back. googling "Teflon Seal Ring resizing" has some useful videos.

Interesting, never heard of resizing Teflon rings before. Never would have thought it possible.
How did you get on?

10 seconds into a cup of hot water, then onto funnel (I made mark on the funnel as to how much to stretch), then on piston. Piece of cake.

Now looking back just hot water would probably do, they become very flexible.

It leaked on right side into rubber boot, not sure what went wrong as right side is actually an easy one.

Now I found few places that do rack re-manufacturing and have testing equipment. Going to use one of them to finish the job. Kinda frustrated..

Wow, it's been more than a year... let me finish this story...

So after my attempt to install kit I had rack re-manufactured by company that does it for many repair shops here. After I installed it - it leaked even worse.
Guys were nice enough to take it back and redo it again for free.... When I installed it after that - it still leaked! I decided not to tell anything to them and ordered new(I mean another re-manufactured) rack. New one came, it was mavel rack (mine was pow-a-rack) and I sent old one for core refund.
New rack did not leak at all. But high pressure hose leaked from connection to rack. After examining everything I realized that plastic dust plug that was on the rack was missing a piece, Apparently when I was removing plug it broke and piece left inside.

Last thing that I did (yesterday) was fishing out that piece of plastic and I also replaced high pressure hose as it looked old . The hose I got was EDELMANN 92140 {#CAC3655, CCC6961, MHE3985BA} from rockauto. It fits! Original hose was all rubber, this one has metal pipe in the middle, but it fits just fine.

Not a drop of steering fluid today in the garage! Great feeling... but the cost is high. Just removing and installing rack 5 times is such a pain... not to mention $$ spent. On the other hand - I just got unlucky this time. I bet installing seal kit works quite often on first try.
