Removal and reinstallation of 4.0 TPS
On a 1994 4.0 facelift, is it possible to remove the the TPS, in order to clean it, without having to readjust it correctly? I know that some are slotted to allow for adjustment. Not sure about the 4.0 though. I have a FF17 Code and the TPS looks pretty dirty. Plus i was reading in the XJ40 forums that a dirty TPS could also result in Limp mode. |
My only experience with the 6cyl is my AJ16 in the X300.
Same as yours, GRUBBY, and oily stuff running down the throttle shaft. I read what I could back in those days, clear as mud, special this and that, HA> Pre marked its position as best I could. Took the oil filter off and went from under the car. Took it off, cleaned it, and the throttle body, refitted where it was, again, as best I could see. Started it up, SWEET, and still that way today. The thing I did NOT do, was turn ON the Ignition with that thing unplugged, as I believed that is when the system gets confused, as it cannot find the TPS, dunno, shade tree thinking, and a few beers, all good. Good luck. |
Yes it's possible, not a big issue BUT before you take it out, check its position and voltage, either use multimeter or OBD scanner and record its exact position when closed and when you put it all back together make sure its in exactly the same position/voltage when you tighten up the screws. If you'll be out by even 0.02V when closed, you'll have high idle and despite how it looks, you can adjust it by maybe 0.1V and that's a difference between 750RPM and 2500RPM idle. While in there make sure that TPS shows as close to 5V at wide open throttle as possible, adjust linkage(which is surely stretched) as needed and of course clean the TB and set the gap to factory spec before adjusting TPS.
So in short: butterfly gap at 0.02(as far as I remember), TPS as close to 5V as possible at WOT and same voltage as you started(around 0.6V) when closed. |
That throttle disc should be 0.002", so just a typo me thinks.

The Jaguar Publication S_91 AJ6 Engine Management has ALL the if you need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It a large file (about 14mb) so it cannot be attached to this post. bob |
Cleaned up the TPS and all is good to go! The car has been running great! |
Any chance you’d be willing to take a few pics of the TPS and post them here?
