Restoration XJS V12 manual gearbox 1978

Hello everyone, I opened a thread as the Jaguar of Spain forum but since I'm also a fan of this international forum also wanted to share the process the restoration have started a very unique as I present the XJS, it is a pre he XJS coupe 1978 with manual 4-speed transmission. I guess most of you know quite well the history XJS model and its various times since the model was in production no less than 21 years, I knew something but following the discovery of this car I learned quite a bit more of this model I did not know in its long history.
Focusing on the time of this model is the first generation commonly called "pre he" it was the only stage in the history of the XJS V12 engine that had the option of mounting manual gearbox, there were still only 385 vehicles with these settings so this unit is quite rare in the family XJS and LHD think it must be even more scarce. I will try to leave the original car as much as possible because I think in vehicles these days is the best way to make tribute. The vehicle is very full and has almost oxides thus facilitate the task. Also I'll tell the story of how I've acquired and above all will inquire into the history of the car itself as it was registered in Spain in 92 but came from the UK and LHD certainly must have some curious history.
I advance any photos.

Mucho bonito. - thanks for sharing the photos.

Doesn't look like it needs too much work......

I think it's crazy that more of them weren't fitted with a manual gearbox. I can understand the arguments in very modern (2010s+) cars that automatics are better. But back then, automatics were crap!!! Even driving my '07 XKR in automatic mode can be a soulless experience.

Hello, I found an article in a specialist on a road test of a XJS with manual gearbox 1976 magazine, it is a model preserie but ultimately equal to the model that I have, I think it's very illustrative of how vehicles are valoravan at that time and that virtues and defects predominated, also makes this manual model valuation with respect to automatic. I hope you find interesting, I liked it a lot.
A greeting.

Please keep us posted! The early XJSs are rare to have survived.

That's the inertia cut-out switch that's behind that panel. When it cuts out it pops up. You just push it down to reset it.

Cheers

Hello again, I will tell you the latest advances made in the car:
I repaired the fuel pump that's what they told me why the car will not start, once repaired it was only the rotor locked rollers with a cleaning of all the parts and a new O, pump.
As the tank is removed I use a provisional jug and a hose to close the temporary circuit. Nothing to the pump and to contact noted that the pump can not hear, I check the relay is broken, these cars have to run about 3 seconds to prime the circuit and stop before returning to work once you take the engine start-up and the engine is running, change the relay and now if you hear when giving contact. Say that before this compression check of all cylinders, all being between 12 to 13 kg / cm2, say that this is an engine with 9: 1 ratio, also I put new spark plugs. Shot start but the engine will not start, I decide to lift everyone injectors for injecting fuel and see that they do not, I check that it gets power and if they arrive, remove all the plugs of the injectors and test each one exciting them manually taking pressure on the ramp until spring and injected. I again put in place, we give the starting and prize !!! The cat begins to purr and even meow. The oil pressure is between 3 kg / cm2 and 6 when idling revs.
So far that's it, I'll post a video to what you hear.

Sounds healthy!

First making contact with the car in motion.
The engine has plenty of power , the wheels easily skating in first and second gear , it feels great acceleration .

The dampers are not in good condition and must be replaced . Also replace all rubbers suspension and stabilizer bars.

Barto 03-20-2016 06:52 AM

Hi Javier,
You should also replace all rubber fuel lines in engine bay and above the rear driving train coming from and going to the fuel tank. Also look carefully at cooling system (radiator, water pump, viscous coupler and its bearing, hoses, etc...) to avoid any water leak and overheating cause.
Great car BTW! I had a dozen XJS of all types in the past years but the factory manual pre HE is by far the best and funniest I ever drove.

Hello, my English is not the best and I have to help a translator to explain about some things I want to say and I guess sometimes are not the most appropriate for the context in which they want to enter words, therefore I excuse me and I hope you understand that not mastered English well and I do what I can for you to understand me.
A greeting.

JagCad 03-21-2016 09:18 AM

Javier:

No criticism intended, your English is more than fine.

It was just me, playing with words.

The international scope of this forum is intriguing as well as the technical stuff.

Yeah, beware of the old stuff in that car. Under bonnet heat is terrific.

1. Cooked electric wires short out.
2. Old fuel lines burst.
3. Old fan belts drop out.
4. Old coolant hoses split.
5. The old plastic fan can loose blades at speed.

These V12's do not tolerated over heating well.

Leading causes of the demise of these cars.

1. Under the bonnet fires.
2. Over heated coolant and dropped valve seats.
3. Rust.

Yours is definitely a prime survivor. enjoy....

Carl
