seat material

Hi all,
I have an '87 coupe. the stitching on the drivers seat started to give way. Currently it's about a 3" long separation. I called an auto upholsterer today to inquire about getting it re-stitched. He said more than likely he couldn't do it due to the age of the leather.

Alternate plan B. Get a new seat made.
Where would I get the material and how much money am I looking at. I want to keep the original mulberry color.

What kind of material do you want and what type of workmanship?

I had seat covers made by Pauls Jaguar in Florida. Exactly as original, I was very pleased with them.

This is also where I got mine, they use the original materials or better if you like. I believe it was about 525 a seat.

A proper upholstery shop can replicate it for you. If the passenger seat is also worn, Id do the pair. I had the leg bolstering attached to the center cushion since, Ive always hated the way the originals split. The driving position forces you to rest your leg on the bolstering, and sometimes on the split.

Those are very nice looking.

Did you have to ship the seat or can they do the seat material and send it to you. Alternatively can they provide the material and I have a local shop do the work?

If that's what Paul's is charging, I'd hop on that....that's a pretty good deal.

I have ordered new seats from Lseat for my 1996. It initially arrived with the wrong piping color, so I sent it back and they're making it right. Will post pics once I get it.

I used them to replace seats in my wife's 2005 Honda Pilot and thought the leather was great, and I was thrilled with what I paid! (about $350 with shipping for both front seats) The quality was certainly good.

He told me hasn't raised prices since the 90's, I'm not sure if he was joking or not.

If you are handy you can SAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT

1. You will have to remove section or entire seat you want repaired.
2. Remove the covers for the bottom and seat back
3. Take completely apart stitch by stitch. ( You you will end up with a bunch of pcs.). Typically some sections such as sides or backs etc. are not leather.....but vinyl
4. Take to auto upholsterer or someone that has heavy duty sewing capability. (GET QUOTES)
5. Locate supplier of automotive leather. I found my Coffee color leather from a company in Los Angeles area. Had to purchase min. Quantity of $150. Several yards. More than enough for one (1) complete seat.
6. Leave all the original patterns that you took apart with leather upholsterer along with foam seat bottom and seat back
7. Take all pcs. Home when stitched back into bottom and seat back covers
8. Reinstall new covers
9. Had enough material to make new center console cover

ABOVE NOT IN EXACT ORDER

$ 150 for leather
$. 225 for upolsterer

THIS IS THE COST for my 1996 XJS 2+2 conv. Drivers seat only (Passenger seat looks BRAND NEW)

Sent samples of my seat leather material ( cut out pcs. From underneath seat).
Recd. Back an almost perfect match (coffee color leather)

Had to purchase hog clips for reassembly.

The reason I did all this is because the 96 Celebration model has LEAPER EMBOSSED ON SEAT BACK AND I WANTED TO MAINTAIN THIS ORIGINAL part of the original seat

I will try and locate name of leather supplier

GOOD LUCK

Softball60/Paul

Got my seat covers today from Lseat and I couldn’t be happier! I’ll post some pictures when I have them installed, but the colors for the 1996 XJS Coffee with piping looks like a great match.

I even had them diamond stitch the inside!

The service is great too. I received the covers the first time and the piping color was wrong and they didn’t diamond stitch it. They took it right back and made me a new set.

Even the embossed Jaguar leaper looks right!

For those interested, I ordered Lark leather with Ecru White piping and stitching.

With shipping, it was about $450 for both from seats.

Nice seats! Are you going to be trying to install those yourself?

Vee 05-17-2019 05:34 AM

Yes, will be installing myself.

This is the second purchase I’ve made with them. I previously bought seat covers for my wife’s Honda Pilot. They’ve been great.

You gotta take pics!! I would never try to do my front seats, but I may take a chance and do the back
