Stub Axle questions
I'm going to have to replace my stub axles. I'm wondering if anyone knows what OEM steel was used or what common replacement axles ( from sponsor vendors for example ) are? I've called and don't get any specific info other than "They're from the U.K.!".
I've located chrome moly stub axles and would like to know if it's worth extra expense, which is not enormous, and the shipment / import fees to get these? Seems a more direct solution and more permanent than bearing savers. |
New stub axles are available from David Manners, SNG Barratt, XKs Unlimited etc. Forget bearing savers, say I. Often on ebay too.

Use Loctite 620 on the inner bearing to prevent it from spinning on the stub axle.

A mate of mine used to build e-Type and XJS race cars he told me to use Loctite on the inner bearing.

Yep, Loctite is the go.
Before that, on my MK7, I used a centre punch at 3 spaced distances around the inner bearing seat circumference of the stub, and that inner bearing was then a TIGHT fit, and the wheel wobble ceased. This was in 1968, and way before Forums and stuff, "ya kept em going as best you could between beers". My S2 cars all had the punch treatment, but the XJS's got the Loctite. |
Nylock nut followup
One more question if you don't mind. I heard a rumor that I need to replace the rear nylock nut on the Stub axle. Is that the case? It's proving hard to locate in the US. I have part number C8737. Is this nut a 1/2" UNF?

I replaced the nuts with the stub axle. I bought the nuts from my local bolt supplier when I lived in Sydney.
