Thermostat Gasket, '96 XJS 4.0

Hi Folks,

I need to replace the thermostat (again) is my '96 XJS (4.0 six, like all '96s). I just received the replacement from SNG Barratt, but no gaskets included. Now I'm confused because I see pictures on-line of round O-rings and flat "old-fashioned" eared gaskets. I know there is a flat gasket on the housing, but is it supposed to have a round O-ring too? And on the flat gasket, 2 of 3 parts stores list a beck-arnley gasket that has four ears instead of the two my car has, but maybe it fits if you cut the two extra ears off? I'm mixed up. I appreciate your cumulative wisdom as usual.

OK.

AJ16 = Gasket

AJ6 = O/ring.

1996 would be AJ16.

Thank you, Grant. And how about this part number? Beck/Arnley Thermostat Gasket Part#: 039-0026. Almost every place on-line says this fits, but it has four bolt holes vs. two on Jasmine, but maybe we have to cut off the two extra. The other part that might fit (according to internet) is the Fel-Pro 2202, but most places say that is for a chevy small block, though it looks like the gasket I remember.

Thanks,

Jaguar shows an O ring: https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/u...hose-4-0-litre

Most aftermarket list a "universal" style gasket and they have a hole that matches the stat, and ears that one pair will match the cover, and the remaining are simply cut off.

The Jaguar Part # for the AJ16 GASKET is NBB2217AC, both 3.2 and 4.0 engines.

I can confirm that there is no o-ring on the 1996 Jaguar AJ16 engine for sure. You need a gasket.

JDHT is not infallible.

The joys of the Spare Parts world, been in it 55 years.

The AJ6 has an o/ring, well my daughters 3.6 does, no idea on the later 3.2/4.0 engines, probably the same.

The AJ6 4.0 litre has an O-ring too.

my 3.6 1986 has a gasket

MMMMMMMMM, back to what I said many years ago.

If there are 2 or more options, check what YOUR car has fitted, and replace with the same, simple.

Thanks Leo.

Unless there is a special groove in the housing for an o-ring that I never seen before, AJ16 does not need an o-ring, it will not fit, try to force one in and you will crack the thermostat housing.

There's no groove, and no o-ring for the AJ16. Just a gasket.

Thanks to everyone that responded. When I finally took off my non-leaking housing I found no O-ring, and a thin gasket that seems to be metal with a rubberized coating.
