tps checking

my car is a bit smelly on idle running rich, thought I would check the tps but after connecting a volt meter across the yellow and red I cant get any volt reading at all from across them with the ignition on in any throttle position, only full ohms which goes down and back up again when turning the capstan, what am I doing wrong please
its only a 2 wire volt meter, is it the wrong sort as I cant see why it would work if it isn't earthed.

That Analogue meter will not do. You will need a Digital Multi Meter.

If you are seeing OHM, then turn the dial to Volts DC, and the LOWEST scale available.

Have a read, it should help sort the issue.

You may need to do this also.

Both write ups are MUCH needed right now!
Thank you Grant and OP!!!

And OP,,, sorry for your troubles...You'll get it. Follow Grant and go to a Harbor Freight. A $10mmeter will do this.

got the digital multi meter and its well out at a reading of 1.9 so could be my problem, thanks for your help and advice,
I have had it off the car a couple of times in the past but because the plastic showed signs of where the washers pressed into it I just lined those up, obviously not a good idea

Good work! I think (know) you're going to notice a huge difference. Once Grant walked me thru it back when, I know I did. Good stuff!
