Unable to open XJS

I am unable to unlock my 1988 XJS. When I turn the key in the lock you hear the usual sound as if it is unlocking but nothing happens so unable to get into the car. Has anyone come across this or know of a manual way to unlock the car?
Many thanks. Andy

Oh, me. Sounds like a link has come free.

1. Get a lock smith. They have methods. Your insurer may reimburse you!!

2. A "slim Jim". A flat strip with a notch on the end to snare a link and release the latch. Most of us do not have them. Cops and tow truck guys do !!!

3. At times it works, DIY method. A clothes hanger wire. Straightened with a hook
on the end to probe and grab a link to release the latch.

What about the passengerf door? The key should open that too.

If that is no go, unscrew a mirror and look into the hole and use some long-nosed pliers to pull the rod

X2 on removing the door mirror and trying to grab the rod inside the door.

Thanks. Passenger door the same so I'll go down the mirror root at the weekend

Thanks Carl. I'll let you know what happens!!

Andy,

Not sure on that year model,

BUT,

On my '85 I got locked out, forget how or why now, and I simply removed the 2 screws holding the RH outer door mirror to the door, then CAREFULLY moved it away from the door, and the backside of the lock flap of the remote handle is right there in your face, flicked that flap with a screwdriver, refitted the mirror, and opened the door.

Hi Andy,

Did you resolve the problem? I am having the same issue and do not understand the cause. Both drivers side and passenger side are affected. I suspect a worn lock mechanism, but find it suspicious that both door locks go at the same time.
