What did you do to or buy for your XJ-S/XJS today?

Hi there!

This is a common thread style on many Volvo boards, so I thought I'd carry it over :D

Simply post what you either did to or bought for your XJ-S/XJS today... Pictures, text, videos,... What ever you have! :)

Daim 10-03-2014 12:40 PM

I'll start...

I've been cleaning more parts lately... Funds aren't the best at the moment, so some things have to wait...

The intakes are still going to be blasted yet... To match the thermostat housings :)

waiting on Fed-EX delivery, replacing steering rack bellows, both sides.

just like a car, always something to repair!

i'll post a pic soon as i get them.

JTsmks 10-03-2014 02:48 PM

I threw the cover from my X300 on top of my XJS (which is also covered) does that count?

FirehawkMike 10-03-2014 04:47 PM

car was delivered last night bought new wiper blades today

M90power 10-03-2014 05:51 PM

today i arranged to meet a seller tomorrow morning and purchase a T5 five speed trans for my XJS.

Great idea, Daim. I control my (replacement) electric main fan using the OEM 85° water pump temp switch and the Grant Francis rewire system. I have recently found it cycles on and off too much in stop/go traffic.

I replaced the temp switch with an "On at 92° Off at 87°" switch from a Fiat. Works a treat and gives enough hysteresis to stop the cycling. But right now the scarce budget is being soaked up buying parts for my tractor engine rebuild. After 55 years the old Massey Ferguson 23c diesel deserves it!

greg gotta love them old farm tractors, Massey is a good one!

superchargedtr6 10-04-2014 09:31 PM

Just finished up working on getting the 6.0 out of a 94 sedan to transplant into my 89 convertible. I got to the full flow oil hoses, and just oh so hate to cut those babies, but looks like my best bet. That, or disassemble the chin spoiler, etc, so I can get to the ends of the hoses where they connect to the oil cooler.....

HA! I brushed up against the covered car whilst hauling Lionel train boxes up to the attic (gotta have lots of hobbies, keeps one out of the house and in and out of trouble).

An XJS grows once covered, definitely not a slimming action..

Daim 10-05-2014 07:47 AM

Ordered quite a few bits today... Just to get the engine back together :)

- 3000 mm of 9 mm diameter fuel pipes (injectors, fuel line to pressure regulator, fuel line from fuel cooler)
- 31 sleeves to do the injectors and co
- 2000 mm of 8 mm silicone vacuum hose (black)
- 1000 mm of 5 mm silicone vacuum hose (black)
- 1000 mm of 3 mm silicone vacuum hose (black)
- timing cover plug
- 2x throttle body joint gasket
- 2x return springs (throttle bodies)
- 12x fuel injector seal ring (lower)
- 12x fuel injector mounting ring (upper)
- 1x vacuum hose spacer/adapter
- 4x inlet manifold gaskets (end piece rear)
- 2x inlet manifold gaskets (front end)
- 2x throttle linkage bush
- 1x extra air valve elbow hose
- 2x balance pipe hose
- 1x Marelli distributor air filter
- 1x Marelli distribtor gasket
- 1x gasket for crank case ventilation

And a few other bits and bobs! I hope to have the ol' girl running again by latest end of October! Then she goes into hibernation behind the house under some nice covers :)

Daim 10-05-2014 09:28 AM

Just finished doing the balance pipe and the crank case ventilation pipe. They were cruddy and dirty and not really nice to look at. As you don't see much of them, I'd sanded them down and sprayed them matte black. Less "bling" in the engine bay :)

XJDanny 10-05-2014 10:18 AM

Today I am going to replace my dash warning lights with LEDs. It'll be sweet to finally be able to see if my parking brake light is on with the top down!

Starting to get ready for the long winter. Been thinking about buying a new cover.

Daim 10-05-2014 10:56 AM

Like the cover Bill! Would really work well optically! :)

My poor '89 dropped some valve seats so the engine must come out.

I just picked up an '85 donor car. He's a bit scruffy but has a good engine. The rest of his parts will hopefully find good homes.

Surgery begins next week.

Changed the oil and filter and looked at the variety of trunk wind deflector / spoilers available on the web.

Daim 10-07-2014 12:50 AM

Took my intakes and coil tower in for some bead bladting. Should look better than new when done...

Daim 10-07-2014 06:00 AM

Picked the intakes up... They look great! Shame I can't upload from my tablet... I'll do so at home instead :)

Nice and shiny engine: here I come! :D

Daim 10-19-2014 06:44 AM

What did I do today? I cleaned inside the intakes. All grime, oil and dust rests have been removed. They are now probably cleaner inside than from factory! :D

Looks good.

I got new spark plugs. Not as exciting. But if they get rid of the backfire on acceleration, that will be exciting.

Wow Daim, are we looking at an extraordinarily clean part or is it painted silver? If its the former, please share your preferred cleaning supplies and technique.

As for me, I ordered some LEDs for the panel lights on my XJ12. It would be nice to actually see the instruments at night :)

The parts are sand and bead blasted :) That is why they shine so well :) ;)

I removed cat's and resonators.

I bought the driver manuals for my car. Now I need to purchase a repair manual. Any suggestions?

Putting the engine back together again! ;)

This is the "nearly equal stage in taking to pieces" before:
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5555/...25df5b32_b.jpg

And this is the same stage assembling again:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3950/...a88a03ed_b.jpg

I hope people now understand why I decided to go so far :)

chriskindbooks 10-25-2014 11:59 AM

I put 45psi in tires, topped it up with V power gas / jug fuel storage stabilizer, laid four plates of mothballs, two on engine/ one in cab/one trunk. disconnected battery and covered. No more got done when it started snowing. She has gone into hibernation for the winter and I will miss her terribly.

Spikepaga 10-25-2014 12:28 PM

I just received a bunch of little odds and ends from Terry's jag

New oem TWR power window and convertible top switches (the after market ones are garbage)

New sport mode switch for the transmission panel

All the OEM hardware to install my new undertray and new brake ducts (got the new brake ducts a month ago from Terry's Jag too)

The color filament that goes underneath the PDNR12

From Paul's Jaguar I got an allegedly "new and improved" bezel to hold down the switches I got from Terry's Jag

And from ebay I got a new wiring harness for the rear fog and back-up lamps. I ruined mine when I changed a bulb.

Diam, you do realize that bare aluminum will corrode quickly and turn dull.
been there done that many times.

also wish i could show the inside of my manifolds and plenums, completly polished and smoothed out internally, called abrasive machining/extrude honed.

Daim 10-26-2014 03:53 AM

According to my blaster, a bead blasted part is less likely to fade and corrode than a sandblasted piece. Mine were bead blasted and are fine. The water rail parts too and they have had loads of water on and in them and no problems at all. They'll go dirty sometime but that is it :)

ronbros 10-27-2014 10:36 AM

diam, my personal experience is, in winter, condensation forming from moisture from setting in a humid climate .

of course a dry heated garage could help, so now i spray a little WD40 on bare surface.

Jonathan-W 10-27-2014 11:43 AM

bought
case of oil filters
rotor for dist. ( found a great deal 28.00)
74C themostats (165 F) (have not installed them... I thought they would be good for after driving shut down with the 14" fan)

ordered
tire valve stem caps...
14" 2800 cfm fan

need
dist cap, gasket, air filter...

would like
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee I6 coil pack...(x2) and make them work on the V12

Roger95 10-27-2014 12:42 PM

Pretty much finished removing the old interior from my '95 for the replacement interior. Some of the original oatmeal leather I can re-dye and reuse but most will be new, along with new carpets and wood (Carpathian elm burl?) and a slightly darker carpet, cinnamon replacing the original mink.
Then new paint and convertible top. My car is ice blue mica metallic, however, I was looking at a gorgeous '65 E Type this weekend that was opalescent silver blue (slightly darker than ice blue). So...will it be the original ice blue or opalescent silver blue?

Jonathan-W 10-27-2014 04:59 PM

lt1 10-27-2014 07:44 PM

I spent some time trying to figure out a way to get the convert roof to work w/o bypassing to much of the orig harness. Trying to find 235 60r 15 tires.
