Default Where to find Green Hydraulic Fluid for Convertible Top?

Anyone had any luck finding the green hydraulic fluid used for the convertible top? If so, where can I get it?

If the green is totally unavailable what fluid is available and is a proper substitute?

Thanks!

Mark,

The standard fluid is not green. It's a 5606H or arguably a 5606A spec fluid. Often used in aviation hydraulic components, it's dyed red. Google 5606H and 5606A and you'll easily source it.

If your fluid is green, that implies it's been flushed and changed to some other spec fluid.

Hope that helps.

Hi Paul,

Both my '89 and '90 XJS's have green fluid in the hydraulic lines. I have also read a few post from people who have experienced a "green shower" due to a leak in one of the lines when the top was being raised.

Is it possible that the green fluid was only used in the States?

As I did some more research I read that Royco 756 was a good substitute for the original fluid. The 756 is red.

Mark,

Sorry about that. Maybe there was a change of spec, or maybe US cars had different oil. If you go to the Jaguar Classic Spares and specify you're from US, what part number does it specify? I know that UK, Germany & Australia use the same part number.

I guess the equivalent oil spec to your green oil must be known by some other US owners.

This looks like a good possibility. Its synthetic and green. Might be worth a try.

Thank you!

I used the Royco when I put the new seal in my pump, flushed the system, and it. The PO had obviously used power steering fluid, and a bottle of it was still in the car. I can tell anybody who cares, the correct spec fluid made a incredible difference in the top operation. I read somewhere that the top should fully retract in 6 seconds. Mine does. I think the extremely thin viscosity of the Royco 756 is the difference. With the power steering fluid "mix"?, the top took its own sweet time, the power windows didn't work right, etc. Thin fluid, less amp draw to the pump, means a faster pump.

Could it be this stuff? I'm 99% sure it's green. Part number JLM9886 for Jags but used in many other cars.

OIL-MINERAL HYDR - Terrys Jaguar Parts - JLM9886

If you Google Castrol HSMO Jaguar you should get lots of hits. Everybody sells it.

But, again, I'm not 100% sure it's the right stuff for your convertible top. Jaguar and Rolls used it in the hydro-assist suspension and braking systems...and perhaps other uses as well?

Cheers

I'm in the us and my convertible top lines look like they have red fluid in them, I have not seen the fluid just the lines that have a red tint to them... top works fine...

when I want to work on the 1/4 widows I pull the top pump fuse... :- )
