So, when I purchased my 1984 XJS I was unable to get the windows to work. I was able to determine, with help from some of you, that a relay located under the dash was bad. I ordered and installed that and then had power to the connectors that plug into the window motors but the motors won’t work. I have now had the motors reworked and went today to reinstall them but still got nothing.

At the plugs the motors connect to i get 11.6v when the switch is put in the up position and -11.6v in the down position. I am also getting 11.6 v when I put one lead on either wire and ground the other lead. This seems to mean I am getting power to the motor. I also Know the motors work, I tested them.

Any my idea what could be going on? My theory is that, once under a load (ie window motor) the circuit breakers trip. Is this something others have seen? My friend also believed it could be a faulty ground at or near the switches. It’s happening on both sides so I’m not sure how to test that.

With the motors out, does the glass slide freely in the runners. Age related dust etc will bind the glass, overload the circuit and indeed, trip the breaker. Silicon Spray is my lube of choice here.

The mechanics of the regulators, as in the arms, rollers,etc must also be free moving and well lubed.

Earths, hell yes, and there would be some in the console, from memory, its been a while since I delved into that inner sanctum.

I did not attach the motor to the mechanism or the window when I went to test it. I just held it and worked the switch. So those things you mentioned are not a factor in this case. Thank you for the advice though

Is the ground good?

I’m going to try and replace the circuit breakers with fuses first , hopefully eliminating those as the problem then go after the grounds. A friends going to help me with that, I’m not sure how to go about it.
