The soft top on my 1994 XJS rubs on something when almost lowered. It doesn't stop but does shudder a bit as if being held up. What can this be?

This is a very common problem on a Car of that year (assuming your Car is a 4.0L) and so its best to lower the hood a little bit at a time.

Then just before it gets to the point where it starts to rub, assist the fabric into place as you lower it down.

I've got a 1995 4.0L and the Soft Top on that one also does that too.

 

Thanks, I couldn't tell if it was the fabric or something mechanical. By the way, I had a 1972 Stag in England many years ago and If I recall right it had a similar habit

 

Yes! some of these Cars can throw up some interesting glitches.
