Default 1972 XKE/4.2l/auto/Coupe/Is that a good one?

Hello,

Let me start by saying I know nothing about Jags. My father
came over asking a bunch of questions, and he is equally as
uninformed. His friend is selling one and he is thinking about
buying it. He is going to bring it over Monday. So, I will repost
with more details and some pics.
Do you guys know if this is a desirable year/engine/trans
combo. He said it is in good shape. I know it will be tough to
answer this without all the detail, but what is something like this
worth?
Thanks in advance with the help!

A 4.2 would be a six cylinder and if it has an automatic it would be the 2+2 Coupe (as opposed to the 2-seater coupe). And it would be 1971 -older, not a 1972....although that might come down to a simple typo.

Anyhow....

As XKEs go the 2+2 6 cylinder coupe with automatic is generally considered to be the least desirable variation. And, also, the only reasonably affordable pathway into XKE ownership.

Rust is the biggest issue with old XKEs so inspect the bodywork very very thoroughly

Cheers
DD

If the body needs any restoration work, you may want to walk away. You'll want to spend a few hundred on a professional assessment. Are there any good indy Jag repair shops near you?

On a car like that, you could change the drive train; fairly common.

I would concur with Doug's assessment. It would have to be a 1971 (or possibly earlier, but assuming that's just a typo) if it has the 4.2. This is a Series II car, which as Doug mentioned is typically the least desirable of the XKEs due to limited power output from emissions gear, among other issues.

However, given the market, it can be the only affordable way into an XKE for most.

+1 Rust is always a huge concern with these cars.

Pictures and more information would help.

Check websites like Hemmings or auction data to try and get an idea of the value.

1. Check 71 & 72 etype coupes on ebay. There are always some up for sale there. Watch the auctions and you will get an idea of market value.
2. Find a good indy mechanic that works on etype Jags if you can't find a specialist. Pay him to examine the car.
3. Do the same with a body shop/restorer. Beware of rust!!
4. Finally, if you remain serious check with Jaguar Clubs of North America to see if the car is numbers matching. If so that adds to the value.
Good luck and enjoy the process and the car if you end up buying it.
