2009 XK - Ownership, reliability and worth buying?
 

Hey all,

After many years with my reliable 2013 XF - I have had to let go and get a Honda Minivan for the sake of the family.

I am now craving a second car and getting some good deals on a 2009-2010 XK base model.

Can you please advise on the reliability, maintainence and whether it is worth getting this car (Going to cost me US$10K, with 60-70K miles on it).

I need it to be easy to run and maintain or the wife will leave me. Any advice would be much appreciated.

BTW - car will be driven 120 miles per week at most.

Get a late MY as you can, ensure it's one of the facelifts with the headlamp washers in the bumper so 2011/12

I picked up my 2014 registered XK Dynamic R for £32,000, here in the UK you can buy a facelifted XKR from £25k, so from memory that's about 120k UAE Dirham

I prefer the 07-09 body style, the 2009 4.2 N/A engine over the 2010 5.0 direct inject, but would chase the direct inject engine if I wanted more power (I don't). I also prefer the 09 shifter over the dial knob. These are just personal preferences though and don't address your question.

As far as reliability, the 2010 has no more issues than the 09 with the exception of the water pump. Something I wouldn't mess with living in Dubai. If you go with the 2010, either ensure the water pump has been changed to the latest version or plan on doing it upon purchase.

Overall reliability is high on the 4.2 N/A engine and the 5.0 sans the water pump.

Electrical gremlins will pop up if you don't use a battery maintainer, regardless of year. My 2 cents.

I'm not sure if the OP only wants the 5.0L engine because I don't know about model years in Dubai. In the USA, the 2009 has a 4.2L engine and the 2010 has the 5.0L. In England and other European markets, the 5.0L engine, LED taillights, revised front body style, and other changes began with the 2009 model year. Yes, it's confusing.

I'd go for at least 2010. Water pumps on the 5.0's seem to be the big one. Easy enough to fix.

$10,000. US for an '09 XK?? If it was sold in Dubai, when new, at that price I would buy it. I have read that Jaguar fits their cars differently for the desert climate, AC & Engine cooling. If it was shipped in by the owner, from Europe, there might be a problem with overheating in the desert sun. There should be no problem with reliably if the car was properly maintained.
As for the price, My '09 XK cost more than $22,000. US ,last year, and that was a good deal here, in the US, for a one owner car with 44,000 miles on it.
Of course have a mechanic check it out for you, as when buying any used car.

Rick, appreciate that in Dubai an XK is a very pedestrian vehicle as they are VERY image conscious, they change their cars what seems every year

I bought an 09 XK conv. with 50k miles last year for 27k. We have had a few issues, but they seem to be regular known issues, so just do your research on the car and see if these things are about to go or are already fixed! The water pump and housing is one of them. The other item that went for me was a fuel rail sensor or some such, now I don't remember what it was called. I think the bad reputation for poor reliability just wont die.

V8 is the default engine in UAE. They like their V8's.

Keep up with fluid inspection/maintenance and these are great daily drivers for many miles.

Some form of coolant leak loss seems to creep up on these cars.

Looking at a 2010 5.0 USA. How can I determine if the Water Pump has been replaced? Is it that bad?

Greg, others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can unless:

a) There's supporting paperwork and/or
b) You do it yourself

IIRC the part number of the pump isn't viewable from the top with it fitted :(

I've got nothing to say mine's been done, so will be having this done this year.

Most 2010/2011 water pumps got replaced around 45K Miles when I look at public car faxes on cars for sale.

Cars that got driven a lot a second water pump would follow at 90K Miles.

Cars that gotten driven less such that they crossed the 45K mile water pump at a later date did not seem to need a 90K mile replacement. It would seem a later part extended life. Not sure where exactly this later part came in to play.

This however, was looking at XKR's rather than XK's.

I would just budget for it if it happens and not worry too much about it.

I just had mine replaced. 43K miles. If you ever have it done by an Indy, make sure they use the right coolant. The place that did mine didn't and I didn't trust them enough to return. So I dropped another $200 having a second shop drain, flush and refil the coolant.

I would not do it preemptively.
Unless you are sure of 2 things-
1. that you will have a problem
2.the replacement will be better than the one you have.
