2011 xkr opinion
 

Hello, I am looking at a 2011 XKR R175 at a luxury car used dealer. It has 21,000 miles. It is traditional black on black. It looks clean and well kept from California. My concern is that the carfax has 15 items on it and has had the 15k, 30k, and 45k maintenance done by a Jag dealer in California. It only has 21k on it... maybe the years. Looks like it had a computer repaired or reprogrammed and wiring fixed.

I have never owned one, but have had a couple BMWs. I am hoping for a car that will last me about 10 years for a non-daily driver. I know Jag has some issues over the years, but would like to know if there are any serious things I should be concerned about? They are asking $57k.

Are there some expensive repairs on the horizon?

These cars are very reliable and have relatively few issues. The price seems high compared to other 2011's, although the 175 is a relatively exclusive model. One word of note is that there are no gauges on the XK/XKR and checking the oil is a pain as it's done via the car's computer. Oil level is critical as is coolant level as there is no temperature gauge either. The 5.0L supercharged engine is really a thrill to drive.

It is a beauty, but they are asking way over blue book, even given it's low miles and limited production. If you are planning on owning for 10 years, the premium may not matter as much.

This example was at Exotic Classics in New York just a few weeks ago and they were asking $49,000. Likely sold for slightly less. There was a couple others this summer that sold by similar dealers in the <$50k price range.

Thanks for the tips. I assume the oil level and change intervals is use defined by the computer. BMW does this same thing I believe. I am guessing I could visually see the coolant level in the reservoir tank?

Is there anything I should check closely when looking at the car to purchase?

Check the leather dashboard for "shrinkage," waviness, "bubbles" or loose leather. Dash replacement or restretching and repairing of the dash (as I did to mine), can be an expensive proposition unless covered under warranty. This is quite a common problem on these cars

I agree the leather dash is something to look for, however for a 2011 with 21,000 miles, to have this issue, it most likely would have to be left outside for the majority of it's life. For the most part, the dash leather shrinkage has been found on the earlier cars or the very high mileage ones. The water pump (which might not have been mentioned) on the other hand......can start leaking at 5,000 miles.

I wouldn't expect it of a 21000 mile car either, but there are telltale signs early on before it gets bad. So, I just thought it prudent to have him take a look at something that he may not have been thinking about. Obviously, the water pump has been about the only engine bay weakness, and should be checked.

I don't know if you've seen this listing, but here's an XKR 175 with only 5000 miles listed for less than the one you're looking at plus there's a best offer attached to it.

If you are after an XKR, I would look nationally unless that one is your dream color combo. The XKR is a very well made car with premium parts throughout. No question the car will last your time of ownership. Jaguar's construction techniques are better that what Germany's doing and the all aluminium can't be beat!

I'd still own mine if it was a manual. I couldn't shake wanting to row my own. XK is a beauty to wash and pleasure to drive.

If I were seriously considering this vehicle I would have a full inspection done by a Jaguar dealer and then have the body inspected by a Jaguar approved body shop. A worthwhile investment if you plan on keeping the car for 10 years.

I have personally inspected the vehicle and it is beautiful. I was seriously considering it, but couldn't get past the $7K premium to others available for sale elsewhere at the same time - I purchased a 2013 instead. PP is a very reputable dealer and I have previously purchased an older collectable car from them. I only have positive things to say about the team there. They are right across the street from Seattle's primary Jaguar dealer and I am sure they would drive it across the street and allow the dealer service team to go line by line through the previous maintenance report with you - likely no more than $400 which is what Tacoma Jag dealer charged me for an independent inspection. The car also had a high-end cover in the trunk that I don't believe they mention on the listing. Not sure if the owner covered it outside, or in the garage, but it has been loved.

Thanks for checking it out and providing input. I drove it today. Two things popped up, one minor. The rear tires are riding on their wear bars, which is illegal in Washington to sell by a dealer. They should be aware of that. Second, at 60 on 405 I heard a deep throaty howl from the front. I verified it isn't engine speed related and I don't think it is the brakes.

I did see the cover. Seems like a clean car. Could that be the water pump? I did plan on bellevue Jag if I purchased it, but they don't want to budge much. I showed them the New York sale. The comment was that sometimes dealers make mistakes and sell things too low. I even showed them the KBB which puts it at about $47000. They simply said KBB didn't take into consideration the rarity of this model. I told him that it says on the KBB sheet they take all sales into account to produce this estimate. He first tried to tell me the NY car was not a 175. I showed him it was by comparing the VINs. One odd thing is that the main VIN is slightly different on the Ebay car.

I am really not sure about buying a car on Ebay unseen... but thanks much.

Any thoughts on the howl from the front? Could it be simply the tires?

Oh, can someone clarify the warranty? I hear 4yr/50k mile and 5yr. The ebay car says 5 years, but the jag dealer said only 4 yrs....

It is 5 years/50k from date of first sale and does not need to be transfered to new owner. Includes all maintenance as well. Jaguar extended warranty can be purchased much more reasonably if mileage is under 49k and at least 30 days remaining on original warranty. Price jumps significantly after that window.

I purchased an xk this summer and had a similar issue. The car sounded like it needed a new differential. It was the Dunlop Sportmaxx tires in my case.

I would just move on from this car; let the dealer sit on it if it's so rare... Too many other XKR's out there to be nickel and dimed on. An XKR 175 isn't worth the extra hassle IMO.
