4.2 Liter oil change protocol?

Did my oil change a few months ago myself,have to say it was quite easy to do and the filter was easy to access better than my old xkr, used Castrol 5w30 magnatec A1 which i eventually sourced, straight forward job, although i hadn't a car lift, so i jacked each side and placed wide timber blocks under the front wheels to gain access to filter and drainage plug, once i had the oil tray in and filter off and plug out i let it off the blocks to drain. I jacked up the opposite side of the car to the drain plug as high as i could and i would say another 1/2 liter came out i would say. Then back up on blocks and drain plug in and filter on, left underneath cover off till i checked for no leaks. Back down again and oil in, put in 7 liters and then started, left to idle for a while then stopped engine and left to let the oil settle. On checking engine level it took about another 1/2 liter. So book says 7 liter for service fill but i put in an extra 1/2, i think this was due to me jacking the car at an angle and getting some more of the used oil out, shows what oil is still left in the sump pan if drained in the level position. So no leaks and underneath cover back on, just 4 screws holds this on.
I used Castrol Edge before, but the car seemed to burn a lot of oil, so went back to the Castrol magnatec with no oil burning issues. Think the Castrol Magnatec suits the older 4.2 engines better.

I own a pristine 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible.... 4.2L Supercharged engine.
Showroom condition, 17,800 miles and probably the finest 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition in the USA.
There is absolutely nothing special about changing oil on the car.
As the member above stated, you simply remove the plastic skid plate undercarriage protector. Most modern cars have the plastic shroud under the engine. The Jaguar 4.2 XK/XKR is nothing special here.
The oil filter is normal canister type filter and I use the K&N brand for my 4.2L engine. Model K&N HP-1014 Performance Filter. From Amazon $13.50 Google the model.
I buy my Castrol Oil at Walmart in a 5-Quart container and 2 extra quarts.
5 Qt Container is: $22.88 and each quart thereafter is $8.00
All you need is the filter and oil, nothing more, nothing less. The K&N HP1014 oil filter is a perfect match for the Jaguar as well as the Castrol Oil.
I have been taking all of my cars to a local oil change shop that does oil changes only with my own filter and oil and they make the change for $26.00.
It takes 15-20 minutes for them to make the change. They check the tires, all fluids, vacuum the car and wash all the windows. There is a crew of 3 total working the XKR.
I take all my cars to the same national brand name oil change shop, which includes my 2014 Porsche 981, 2014 Ford F150, 2009 Jaguar XKR and once my free oil changes are used up at the GM dealership on my 2015 Corvette C7, I will do the same on it.
There is a myth that an oil change on a Jaguar pre-2010 model with a 4.2L engine is something special. Paying a Jaguar dealer $150+ for an oil change is crazy in my mind. It is not necessary to have a Jaguar dealer do this. You can do the work yourself with a set of ramps. But why DIY for saving $26.00?
I have never had a single problem doing oil changes this way for the past 10 years+ at this local shop, and I know all the oil change guys who work at the shop and on my cars
Anybody who wants to challenge my experience is talking out of their butthole. Plain and simple.

I have the oil changed annually because my XKR sees less than 3000 miles driven annually.

Richard - It was a .gif for "dropping the mic(rophone)", which is an expression indicating that you've dropped knowledge and truth on the forum. I presumed that the notion of a "mic drop" was fairly commonly understood by those with internet access. And I'm not a kid - I'm 57.

My dealer does an oil change for less than $100 and includes a complete inspection and great car wash. I don't understand why I would want to spend $50 on materials and an hour of time given the alternative. I use synthetic and change the oil once a year with about 6,000 miles.

Are you sure they are using 5W-30 syn? I've seen dealers write that on invoices but it was Dino oil from a barrel they were using. I personally NEVER like my car washed by dealers... even though I demanded Porsche not wash my new car they did so anyway and kindly left several deep scratches which they paid to have respayed. Lastly I trust my mechanical skills and the care that comes with it so even if it was free labor I'd still do my own so I know what was done and how.

And AGAIN I agree with Leeper. My wife had me meet her at a Chevy Dealer's quick oil change place once so she could get her Lexus serviced. She asked for Full Synthetic before I got there. When I arrived, I saw the minimum wage goons filling it up straight out of the bulk 10W40 buck-a-quart dino barrel. Needless to say, I started pitching a bitch quite loudly in the Customer Waiting area. The manager apologized profusely, immediately reserviced her car with Synthetic and another filter, plus gave her certificates for three more free oil changes.
She never used those certificates, never went back to that place.
