Almost buying an XK advice please
Hi lads, I'm a member of the x100 for about two years. I saw an xk x150 2012 today with 50k miles from a private owner, with 3 years remaining extended guarantee on engine and transmission.
Price is 24k. Questions. 1. What kind of troubles can have a 50k miles xk (serviced at the dealer) 2. How complex and reliable is the x150 comparing with the x100? 3. I'm also evaluating a Maserati Ghlibi Q4, any of you had a personal experience comparing the two? 4. What's the meeting differences between the x100 and x150? The felt it way too big, anyone had the same feeling? Do you have any paper with a check list to buy a 2012? thanks in advanced! |
Since you've been an X100 Forum member for 2 years, I suggest that you do an Advanced Search on this X150 Forum for your specific questions. There are many threads detailing the trouble spots and recommendations, as well as members who own both X100 and X150 models.
IMHO, there is no comparison between the X150 5.0L XK and the X100. You need to drive it. Pay a Jaguar dealer to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection using the CPO checklist with an estimated of the cost of repairs. |
Ghibli is a better machine. Some will argue details that are no different than arguing in defense of an XK. The Ghibli has Italian flair, thats hard to beat. The XK has English understatedness. So If you like 4 doors, get the Ghibli. If you like sex get the XK. |

Uh....have you investigated the Ghibli forums and the quality reviews? Nice looking cars with fussy interiors. In what way is a Maserati better? It is certainly not more reliable, not more beautiful, not more luxurious, not faster, not more comfortable, not as well equipped, and nowhere near as robust. Exotic, yes. Quirky? Yes. Prestigious? Possibly. Italian flair? Yes. |
Take it from a former Maserati owner, you wont even get a cold if you own one, your quota of misery will be full.

Infotainment on the Ghibli is better, although generic. But the Ghibli is betrayed by quality issues and its fiat/chrysler origins, I have never heard anything good about one and your comment that it was an awesome drive is the first I've heard of that. Personally I wouldnt take the Alfa either. I haver had experience with recent alfas and I've learned my lesson, just cheap and nasty with poor warranty response and paint so thin that the painter must have been paying for the product out of his own pocket.
The 2012 XKR was awesome, the only let down is the infotainment IMO, and overly intrusive traction control/dts. |

Thanks for your comments. My question about the Maserati was based exactly on the reliability problems and the poor material quality. The price is definitely better. You can buy a Ghibli 2015 for 30k, impossible for an xK. I did my research on the jag and everything looks to be just like what the owner told me. Received the extended guarantee contract and it’s a Exclusionary with 2 remaining years and 33k miles and no deductible. That helped me made the decision so I reserved it. The owner won’t be in town for holidays but we arranged that as soon as he gets back he will take the car to a Jaguar dealer and if everything looks good I buy the car. The car comes with those chromed 19 inch rims (original). Having a 2006 XKR with 20 Montreal I feel the need of “fixing” the issue. How hard and pricey could be getting original 20 inch rims? Any positive comments in the chromed 19 inch? thanks again! |
It’s the xk, not the XKR. That why I’m asking about the differences. My XKR has 390 with 399 ft. The xk 2012 has 385hp with 380 ft. Will I feel any difference in power? My current XKR has massive breaks, that in more than one situation they were really useful. How good are the ones in the 2012 XK? Not supercharger

Are you looking at the 5.0 n/a or 5.0 sc ??

Just a little clarity here are we talking about the Mas GT. V8 coupe or convertible or the V6 family sedan. .

The materials in the Ghibli are generally lower quality than the XK. Ghibli has much better transmission especially on the manual downshift. 4 door midsize sedan and 2 door GT are kind of far apart IMO. The current line up Maserati's are not aging well and you'll pay premium prices for servicing them which many owners are not doing. I would step it up to the Qporte if going the Maserati route. Virtually same price used, but a much nicer car. Qporte is available in a V8 if that's what you are after. The handling of the Ghibli I thought was fine.

Good choice on the XK! Glad you didnt get a sedan.

Sir John,
Although I dearly love my X100 XKR, the word reliability and X100 can't be used in the same sentence. My X150 XKR has been quite reliable. However, it's not the reliability you will notice when you drive it, it's the quality of the ride, the handling characteristics, and the general feeling of solidity that stands out. On the X100, every time you go over a dip, a bump or hump, the X100 suspension shakes like a bowl of jello after bottoming out for several minutes and always feels jittery. The X150 never exhibits these undesirable things, it is solid, controlled, more compliant, a much, much more enjoyable ride and feeling. As for the Maserati, I, personally know of three people who have had Maserati buy their cars back after repeated, sometimes nearly fatal instances with their cars. And outside of the wonderful sounds that Maseraties make, the Ghibli, especially, looks like a slightly upgraded Toyota Camry. If you don't need the back seats, the X150 is a much nicer car. |
Thanks a lot everyone!
To the question if need the rear seats, I have 6 kids so two or five seats doesn't make any difference, and I won't get an suv. The good thing is that the older one is12 so he fits in the rear seats. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again! |
Nothing fits well in the back seat, especially in a coupe. The windshield sun shade barely fits...
